There must be space for a wildcard entry.

They’re not actually as bad as I expected, Saltire crossing’s a bit cheesy though – I expect that’s what the SNP will push for!

I shudder to think of how much ££ they’re spending on choosing the name though….

I think thats a bit to long for a bridge name…

Why not, it’s quite a long bridge

Maybe they could extend the bridge straight over the top of fife and touchdown somewhere north of Dundee and call it “a bridge too Forfar”

Nah – you can’t call it that. Longbridge is in Birmingham.

Anyone heading from Lothian to Angus will probably just call it The Stirling Bypass.

    “The Bridge of Shame”

we are building a new crossing for the 21st century

… which has no access for pedestrians or cyclists. I think that’s just embarrassing for one of the highest profile civil engineering projects in the country, and shows how serious the Scottish government’s commitment to promoting cycling really is. I still can’t believe they can get away with not making a major piece of transport infrastructure like this multi modal, as a cost cutting measure.

They are keeping the old bridge open for public transport and bikes, but anyone who cycles that regularly will know how often it is closed due to “high” winds. The new bridge, of course, will be designed to allow motorised transport to continue to cross in severe weather.

I see that a lot of people were suggesting that Chris Hoy should be chosen to open the new bridge. That’s a great idea, and he could even ride a bike across after he cuts the ribbon…oh, hang on a minute….

Can’t they still use the old one?

Transport Minister Keith Brown said the new bridge was the biggest infrastructure project in Scotland for a generation.

Its £790m, so does that mean the Trams are not now due to deliver until the ‘next’ generation? 😉

And when it becomes too unsafe (which is why they’re building the fifth bridge)???

The reduction in excess traffic, along with some ongoing remedial work, will extend the lifespan of the existing bridge to some far-off point in the future.

And FWIW, it’s not the fifth forth bridge

That’s good. How do they stop the cables slowly fraying then?

And FWIW, it’s not the fifth forth bridge

So it’s the Forth fifth bridge?

The problem is corrosion in the mass of cables making up the major load-bearing structure. They’ve been splitting the “core” apart then blowing air through them to dry them out. This is, apparently, doing the trick.

There is a debate about how necessary the new bridge is given the success of these repairs but of course we’d have not known how it was going until very recently and if the prognosis was poor it would have been too late to start on a new bridge before the existing bridge had to be closed.
