  • New carpets making a sucking/ripping noise?

(Very boring subject, sorry, but I figured STW knows everything, so…)

We had two carpets installed a while back; the same carpet but different underlay as apparently the underlay we wanted shouldn’t be installed on stairs (something which the fitters said wasn’t true, but hey ho). The stairs carpet is fine, but the other makes a strange “sucking” or vaguely ripping-velcro-from-felt noise whenever you lift your foot off the floor.

We’ve had the fitters back to look at it, but they say there’s nothing they can do; it’s stretched properly, flat and whatnot, but this is the only carpet I’ve ever known to make any noise at all and it’s really quite annoying.

Is this just a thing that happens sometimes? Is it likely to stop as things age a bit? Is it worth pestering the company to do something about it, whether that’s replace it with a different kind of underlay or somesuch?

    Any ideas appreciated…
