Monkey – only £4,000 of funding is coming from national sources. If your bit of the North needs something, then perhaps you could start up something similar?

Mr A,what you and your Rasta hairdo fixie Bristol chums fail to realise is that you have pockets of poverty in an overcoat of wealth. We on the other hand experience the exact opposite. You pampered southerners need to get your heads out the sand and face the results of your i,m alright Jack voting behaviour. The hash heads of Brizzel do not need more cycling support. The North DOES.

So you’ll be following this template and opening a similar establishment in your locale then?

No need, they’ve already got their own bike recycling projects.

I resent being called a hash head. It took a lot of effort to give up smoking!

There’s one fixie rider in that video (not counting my occasional dabbling at the velodrome) and he definitely doesn’t have dreads.

Being lectured to by Mr A about small pockets of poverty is a joke. Most of the the collapsed industrial reservations of North England,Scotland and Wales have more pressing problems facing them than financing a bunch of Brizzel trendies into having a nice facility. Its time you southerners had a dose of mass poverty and allowed the peoples of the other Britain to enjoy your middle class lifestyles.

Oh and I dont mean the idea you Tory boys had before the last election of moving 7 million of us down to Cambridge.

So it would seem. But on another thread he’s singing the praises of Aldi waterproofs, so I suppose it balances out.

While I can see what Monkeycmonkeydo is on about, what gets me most is that fact this is all preteneding to be for the good of low income families and the community which by and large wont come all the way into town to get their bike fixed.

How about opening this shop in the middle of St Pauls, Southmead, knowle? target demographic right there….bet you wont though as then you’d have no one to buy the swanky coffee and overpriced cake

    MrAgreeable

You’re basing this opinion on what exactly? Have you talked to any local cafe or bike shop owners about where their customers come from, and how far they travel? Rob and others are putting a lot of time and personal savings into this and you can bet they’ve done their homework. Not to mention that when they trialled the idea on Park Street they had around 100 people bring their bikes in for servicing in 6 days.

Love the way you also answer your own point about location. You’re right, I can’t imagine a cafe in St Pauls would get as much in the way of passing trade as one in the city centre.

And… can people get over the fact that the coffee is going to be decent quality stuff, from a proper machine and everything? Is this really regarded as something dangerously exotic? Maybe it’s time to bring back the coffee lounge bit of the forum.

By the way, they’re up to £3k now, with over 40 days left to go. This is clearly a doomed idea. 😉

It’s about focus, and for good or bad, the tarty coffee appears to be playing a disproportionately larger roll (see what I did there 😉 ) in the proposition than perhaps it should be. A bit more hair shirt and bit less fixie/coffee references may help with the marketing.

If you look at that BBP video, it’s the perfect example of the “hair shirt” approach. I applaud what they’re doing, massively, but I’m not falling over myself to volunteer there. Helping recovering addicts and asylum seekers build bikes takes a lot of care, understanding and patience, not my internet-stunted social skills. And it all takes place behind (very secure) closed doors. I personally prefer the idea of somewhere that’s going to be as much of a drop-in/hangout spot as it is a social enterprise.

And FFS, what’s “tarty” coffee. The rubbish instant stuff you’re probably drinking has been through a much more elaborate manufacturing process than any fresh-ground espresso or cappucino. 😉

I’m an economic migrant (Geordie in Bristol) and now I don’t know whether to support a potentially worthy business effort or shun it and send my hard-earned cash back to the North!

FFS. Surely it’s the tarty coffee and nice cake that will attract people with money – they will spend it on sugar and caffeine and therefore help fund Rob and his team in carrying out its projects for the less well off?

I think we would all be better of contributing to mt local cycling centre in Middlesbrough. Now there is a community that could do with a real break,(cycling or otherwise).Ok we all own one to many Tracksuits and prefer bubble to blow. But that,s better than being attached our hash pipes 24/7 in the hope that we can appreciate some bloke who scrawls on walls and sounds like Wurzel Gummidge. To tall ,don,t be a traitor.Get over there and smash a bottle of Newky Brown over there Dreads.North-East branch of the Angry Brigade.

what wallop said. It’s like Robin Hood without but with coffee instead of arrows and sticks.

If it was all about giving stuff away for free, then it wouldn’t be sustainable.

If northerners weren’t so lazy then maybe they would earn as much as those who live in the South.
Bristol, however, is not in the South.

    It’s sbob.
Slobs are the types of people up north who sit around doing nought but shovelling pies into their grubby mouths, all funded no doubt by their fortnightly benefits.

I’m a cyclist who likes coffee and cake. But I’m struggling to see the attraction of a dedicated cycle coffeeshop, except for one that has loads of bike racks on the premises.

Wasn’t it all started by that ‘Look Mum …’ place on the telly? Makes a nice TV studio, but I’m not convinced it’s viable in little old Bristol.

    MrAgreeable

We’re the eighth largest city in the UK, and we’ve got a cycling rate that’s double the national average. Oxford managed to keep a cycle co-op running for over 10 years (albeit the bricks and mortar shop came to an end in 2011). I think Bristol needs this more than it needs another delicatessen or a student nightclub.

    sounds like the opposite of

guilt free lattes for lefty handwringers

so I’d probably see it as that. Unless I was just looking for insults.

How about builders tea for commoners/middle class wannabes?
