If you'll actually be riding it to work then probably a touring or cyclocross bike would be a good versatile choice.

The advice is not for me, I know how it all works its for a guy at work hes unsure what to go for and I'm not familiar to what the best deals are around the grand mark, also read that you can pick up other brands through halford, Just looking for some recommendations really..

I don't think you'll go wrong getting a Boardman from Halfords, it just depends what you want: HT, FS, road, commuter, CX, SS…..

If this buyer has visions of pootling to work all week and then storming the black runs at the weekend they may be disapointed.

Either from Evans or Halfords using the CTW scheme

The Boardman carbon roadbike looks great for a grand, or if he needs some other kit too then they do an £800 alu model. Spesh Secteur Elite looks good too for a more laid-back, all-day bike (it's an alu version of the Roubaix).

Likewise the Boardman Pro MTB is superb value – good alu frame, 100mm Rebas, X9/X0 mix, Elixir R brakes, etc. Else there's things like the Genesis Altitude 10 if he fancied a steel frame with a longer fork. Or the Core 40 is much the same but in alu.

Anything else mtb wise, maybe from a supplier that halfords deal with?

What sort of riding is the bike going to be used for?

I'd have a Boardman like a shot, personally. I think they even look good, and the spec is superb!
