This week I found myself with a mountain of firewood to store, and no where to put it.

    http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/windy-its-worse-than-i-thought

This morning I was all set to take our old spring water storage tank to the scrapyard, when I thought, all this needs is a roof and a door.

An hour of so with the angle grinder and now, all I need is a roof. 8)

Quite how I enjoy the good health I do, Im not sure. We were brought up on water stored in this tank. I emptied a trailer load of rusty, leaf mouldy slurry.

FFS, will you go and chop down that tree !!! 😉

could you just tip it over and have it open on 1 side ?

    OMINN 😳

Things are slack in the art world. Austerity is the only word I hear from the gallery.

I’ve got to use my creative energy somewhere. Plus, I hate this time of year. Jobs like this take my mind off it.

FFS, will you go and chop down that tree !!!

The winch should be here tomorrow. I’m lining up a mate with a Land Rover mounted one too. Patience is a virtue.

Can’t you turn it upside down, use the floor as the roof?

I think you need to tailor your work to the super rich. Couldn’t you just encrust a painting with some diamonds or something and sell it to some hedge fund type or a ukrainian oligarch’s wife?

    Hmm. No tree cutting content.

well that’s just cost you £40 of scrap metal.

Are we talking about the tree or the storage tank?

Two words – air AND flow

    You gonna get mouldy wood!
I’d prefer to see a pallet-based construction please.

Flip it over and re-mount it on the pad stones then get to work with that grinder again to cut some slots in the sides and back to aid air flow then crack on with painting it to keep your handy work in good nick for the next few years.

Chop chop – nothing worse than a half done job 😉

What about using the storage tank to prop your tree up?

What others said – just turn it over and put some vents in

Thanks for the suggestions. What perhaps isn’t apparent is the size of the tank. it is 10″ x 8″ x 6″. It’s made from 5mm plate. It weighs a lot. Cutting the end out seemed the most expedient route to take. It’s nice and level and at least its off the ground so the wood won’t absorb dampness. I cut some holes in the base to let water out.

As a temporary roof once its full, I may just put a tarp over it, but the serial recycler in me says the scrap/recycling yard will have lots of corrugated roofing sheets in next week.

When I’ve got some more energy I will cut some vents in the sides.

Ace – but get more air-flow through it. Putting a clear sheet on the top/side would allow some solar gain, voila, quicker drying wood 🙂

that wood needs stacking properly, and maybe some guards

It’s mostly leaf mould, in a week or two it will be carpeted in snow drops. Come along Springtime, get a move on.

EDIT Scaredypants, that is an awesome pic.

Perhaps the answer is in the question. Exposing yourself to a few bugs could help build up up your immunity. Maybe.
