Rescue workers remove the body of one of the nine children who were killed when a commuter train hit a minibus taxi in Blackheath, near Cape Town. (Nardus Engelbrecht, Sapa)

"While the forensics people were on the scene, they found another child underneath the other children. Those who died were three girls and six boys" said police spokesperson Colonel Billy Jones.

Five children were also injured. One was in a critical condition at the Red Cross Children's Hospital, and four others were serious at Tygerberg Hospital.

    Culpable homicide:

He confirmed what the Railway Safety Regulator said earlier – that all protection measures were in place at the level crossing between Blackheath and Eersterivier where the accident happened so police would conduct a culpable homicide investigation to try to establish the cause of the crash. Road signs, flashing lights and booms were confirmed to be in working order, the RSR said. "This is the maximum level of protection which can be afforded to a level crossing. The investigation will, amongst others, look at how the accident could have occurred, despite these measures," said spokeswoman Lavinia Mahlangu.

How it happened: (quote from another forum)

The driver of the taxi came to a level crossing whilst the booms were down, lights and hooter going. He pulled around the que of traffic and tried to sneak between the two half barriers. A train hit him in the face. One of the 9 children killed was " Little rock" a girl who was a rape survivor, whose attacker tried to burn her to death.

Please give the grieving families a moment of prayer. Shocking beyond belief.
