So, we have problems at my Mum’s house getting the WiFi signal to tunnel through the thick thick walls and up the stairs.

The Ideal solution, I think, would be a powerline Network thing that can do Wifi too. What I mean is:

Connect Modem to powerline adaptor with cable, plug it into power socket, network goes off through the powerline, have the other powerline adaptor plugged in upstairs, which can then do the wifi thing up there.

The only ones I have seen so far only have the option of having to connect to the upstairs adaptor with the cable. In this case it’s a bit impractical.

Are there any powerline gizmos that can do Wifi?

Seems like I found one…

Adaptor!

I use a Devolo dLAN 200AV wireless N homeplug, no problems with it.

I’ve just done this with Powerline kit like this:

One end at the router sends network over power.

The other end is a WiFi access point in its own right, rather than a repeater (it’s in an area with no WiFi, so can’t repeat a signal).

For seamless setup, the powerline AP was configured with the same SSID and password as my router, but on a different channel (important!).

I set my router on 11 and AP on 1 based on a scan of the local networks.

This means only one SSID and password, so less setup for anyone else joining your network.
