Look for a bargain
Pricing has just become VERY up in the air on a lot of these now the Windows 7 machines are on the market, and if you're careful/lucky you can bag a bargain of a machine running XP on discount from a shop.
Personally, I like the look of the Samsung N110. Has an almost full sized keyboard, and VERY long battery life, which is surely the point of having a tiny computer in the first place right?

I have an Acer Aspire One, its ok. I bought a huge battery cheap off ebay.
Given the chance to choose again i would like built in bluetooth and a 802.11n wifi thingummy.
I have turned my desktop on about 5 times in the last year since buying the netbook. Would be a p.i.t.a for doing real work on I will freely admit.

before buying the £250 samsung check the battery is 6 cell or even 9, i bought a nc10 from comet at £250 it has a 3 cell crap battery.

Got the NC10 from Agros a few weeks ago, Again for £250, but the batteery is only good for 2.5 hours .... Where as my mates ( from god knows where) has the monster 8 hour battery.. I will be getting a new battery off Ebay or similar very soon.

We have the Samsung N110 (follow up to the NC10 - basically identical but slightly better trackpad and longer 9hr battery life).
I'm a big fan!

Depends what you want fom it. If you want a tiny 'puter, look to Asus. I have a EEE PC 701 which is tiny and has bags of 'functionality' has actually functions. It's very light, dosn't mind being dropped and fits in your [map] pocket.

I use a HP mini now for almost everything at work. I just use it with an external USB keyboard, mouse and 19" LCD monitor. Its got 2gb RAM and a 80gb SSD. Now running Windows 7, came with XP pro. For all day to day spreadsheet, word, email etc is excellent, really fast enough.

If your going to use it travel with it make sure it has a matt screen. Much nicer in the real world to use than glossy screens

I rather like my Acer Aspire One.
I got the 16GB SSD linux unit for a bargin £190 or so from expansys or something.
Ive swapped the OS for a nLited XP build and some new drivers and its a sweet little thing. Needed MS to be able to install MSExcel and Im more comfortable with it. I have a legit copy of XP at home, but if I didnt I would pay for W7 instead.
I picked this one mainly because it has an integrated 3G modem - you slot the SIM card in the back. I use it on the train or in my van.
Really good keypad and a great size.
Battery isnt great, but if I need to I can get a 6 or 9 cell. I get 2+hours of music/video or continuous 3G/WIFI out of it. Closer to 3+ hours when running cooler.Posted 2 years ago # -

The Asus Eee PC 1005HA is a good option, too. About £240 inc VAT makes it a bargain. Bit sleeker and more rounded than the NC10 - also comes in white!
Same matte display, a good keyboard and a pleasure to use.
And, yes, the Dell Mini series is rubbish. The 9 was the best one, the 12 was the worst and the 10 is a good design almost completely ruined by a dreadful, dreadful trackpad.

I've had a Samsung NC10 for about a year now and my daughter has had an N110 for about a month or so. They're very similar, and both are excellent. My NC10 does 6 to 7 hours on the battery and the N110 seems to be even a bit better than that.

the samsung n110 and earlier nc10 are lauded all around for good reason. lovely bits of kit, mine is the n110, very useable keyboard, wonderful screen, and quick. i was amazed at how much more vibrant my photos looked on it.

Sad to see the comments above about reliability of the Acers. I've just started looking at netbooks for Mrs Higs and had come to the conclusion that we want the Acer Ferrari One once they release a version without the Ferrari branding.

The NC10 comes in different guises. (different battery) It can be difficult to know which one your getting!

@dr_death with OS x on it is the track pad any better? Was gonna get one for the Mrs XC-Steve to replace her dying Ibook or should I save (alot more) for a Macbook?

I've got a Dell Mini Inspiron, and have no complaints re functionality. But I would recommend using a mouse. The touchpad is a little frustrating at times, mainly due to the 'mini' size.

It's not just the trackpad on my Dell that is crap. The wireless connection keeps dropping (it's not a problem with my other laptop - a HP).

I hate trackpads anyway so rarely even use the one on my full-size laptop. The NC10 one seems ok though, but the N110 is a little improved on that.

Samsung N110 is the one I recommend if you can afford it. Asus 1005HA isn't far behind at all though. If you can go to PC World and see them in the flesh, and see which you like best, I would.

I've got an NC10 and can't fault it. However I've just bought a Compaq (HP) Mini 311c 1010sa. Its about £315 from Overclockers. Its a bit bigger than the NC10 but not much heavier and is better specced, bigger high res screen (11.6"), better keyboard, mouse pad, nVidida ION chipset with HDMI output and a spare memory slot so you can bung in a 2GB module for 3GB total. Given the choice now, I'd get the Compaq every time. Build quality is superb, batterylife is about 4-5hrs and its slim!
