Need to get one for general house duties e.g. sanding doors, walls, garden bench etc.

Any suggestions? Are they are all much the same except for differences in power output?

Nope not the same

There are disc sanders, mouse and belt

Belt are really good for big flat stuff (as you might expect)
Mouse are really small and good for corners

Disc are usually more for very fine sanding and then polishing

After that whatever is on sale…. worth getting a brand name usually but any quality brand based on what deal you can find.
