Any nice NT locations on the way to Edinburgh from Clitheroe?
Heading up Monday and would like to break up the drive with an afternoon at an NT location.
Nearer Edinburgh, ideally, and good for kids (2.5 & 5)..

Not sure which way you are travelling. Gibside is not far from the A1. Wallington and Cragside are just off roads between Newcastle and Edinburgh and both are excellent for kids with loads of space to run around. All now have very good play areas and interesting grounds that you can get lost in. Wallington now has a largely off road cycle route.

We did the same run (albeit starting a little further south in Lincoln) last week. There’s not really anything NT or SNat Trust on that route, A1 via Newcastle is much better, as mentioned previously Gibside is really nice (we stopped there on the way home, have been before too) and has a good playground for kids along with hand pulled beer in the cafe.

Dalkeith country park just to the south of Edinburgh is a good place to visit, gentle bike and walking trails and a huge play area (a couple of quid per child) and a nice restaurant (not cheap though).

Not National Trust, but there’s a few interesting castles in the borders. eg Smailholm Tower or Hermitage Castle. Also Melrose Abbey, Dryburgh Abbey etc.

There’s an interesting original tenement house on the Royal Mile that’s NTS.

Little Sparta down in the pentlands (poss A702 not sure) is superb although not NTS. Really enjoyed it and quite inspirational if you like gardens and sculptor
