You need the Apple site. 😀

Dracs right. If you want to spend £1600 unnecessarily then it’s much easier with Apple. A £400 laptop will do that easily. Can you keep the change?

do you carry it around much? Could do yourself an injury lugging a massive gaming laptop to the gents for a tug

New XPS 15 just launched. Thinner and lighter, ideal for the above. Precision sounds like massive overkill. Consider Latitude, but only 5000 series has 15″ screen. 7000 ultra books available with 12 and 14″ screens. Inspiron is consumer device. #IworkforDell.

XPS 15 would be my choice if I had to carry it around.

Do you need to carry it round? Do you need to run any specific software other than what you list above? Do you have a screen resolution that you like to work with?

I have a 15″ XPS. Fits (just) into my old laptop bag that used to carry my old 13.3″ laptop.

I’m very happy with it. I went for the 1920×1080 version as I’d read some programs don’t work well with the higher resolution versions, plus I was worried everything would be too tiny on a 15″ screen. Also be aware that they don’t come with a LAN socket so if you need to be hard wired you’ll need one via USB.

I also have the XPS 15 (older model) – it did have an issue with the power board when I first got it (‘reconditioned’) but that was replaced and it has been performing well for the last year plus.

Nice screen, quick, plenty of power for what I use it for (all manner of website related stuff including a lot of Photoshop), very slim and pretty light, plenty of USB ports…

Having just researched and ordered a £500 laptop for a new colleague… no, a £400 laptop could *not* do the same.

I’ve got a 17″ Precision with the QHD screen. It’s immense (and definitely a luggable rather than a laptop) – but it’s got tons of power; which is something I need for my job. I had the previous gen 15″ Precision (which shared the bulk of it’s parts with the 15″ XPS) and that was also great.

I went for the precision’s over the XPS because

    1) You can configure the specs when you buy; at the time the XPS was only available in fixed configs.
    2) 3 year next day on site warranty was on the precision. It’s my source of income; if something went wrong I don’t want to be out of action for any longer that I physically need to; though that’s less important now I’ve got the 17″; the old 15″ is effectively a backup machine.

if those two aren’t important (and you don’t want a 17″ behemoth) then go for the XPS. Also the QHD screen is great; I’ve been using the hi-res screens for nearly three years now; no problems under Win10; less usable if your IT dept is going to insist on 7 or 8.

    Oh and for reference – here’s a 15″ vs a 17″

I bought a new laptop before Christmas; one thing I wanted was both VGA and Ethernet ports, along with massive battery life, weigh nothing, smallish screen and quality. Cost not so important, using MY company money.

Ended up with a Fujitsu Lifebook.

Should’ve got something that helped you to count.

Picked up an XPS 15 back in about 2012 when they shifted from the bulky plastic cased ones with full HD and great audio to the slimmer metal cased MAC styles ones. Had a bit of a palaver with Dell as despite a handful of calls with Dell direct confirming spec etc they decided they has messed up the price at the last minute the morning it was being delivered. ie they had checked the order several times including price, built it in China, taken my money, shipped it via UPS and then the morning it was out for delivery they cancelled delivery and sent me an email saying they had made a mistake and if I wanted it then it would be several hundred £ more. Quite a bit of arguing with them and they were not budging, laptop was being held at the local UPS depot, they then messed up and instead of arranging for it to go back to them they released it for delivery.

By this time they had already refunded my credit card so I let them realise this and quickly signed for and started using my new laptop and waited for them to re-invoice me for the original amount.

Laptop turned out to be a mess. Wend to add a larger SSD and noticed that most of the screws in the base where too short to catch the threads in the aluminium case and most had some sort of glue holding them in. Lovely hull HD screen soon got loads of bits inbetween the LCd and the glass. Guy that came to fix it and replace the case/screws brought the wrong keyboard, brought a damaged screen and wiped my OS. 2nd guy was much better but the screen developed the same fault a couple of months later and then the DVD drive packed in.

Since upgrading to Windows 10 it now freezes every couple of minutes.

It has had a lot of use though and despite the keyboard being physically worn out it’s holding up okay. The battery still gets me >2hrs (could almost get 6 when it was new on battery saving mode).

I am considering a new XPS. Guy in work has a nice carbon fibre keyboard surround dell with a lovely touch screen though which is appealing if I can find out what model it is.

I’ve got the old new XPS13 (6th gen) processor.

Love it, super light, plenty fast enough, right number of ports, lovely display.

    Really liking Win10 too. 🙂
