    As above. I’ve not got time to replace it till Sunday but I don’t want to harm the family. We had an open fire before so I assume we are safe but I thought I’d check.
    I presume the real problem is that without a seal we can’t control the flow of air in.

    On the subject of fire rope, everything I’ve read says 14mm for my Stovax Stockton 5 but the new rope looks very fat.

    Almost certainly but not from that. Most stoves I’ve had have had rope hanging off them at some point.

    what does a fire rope do?

    I’ve seen gas fires spilling CO due to them not being sealed correctly, either into the opening, or the surround not being sealed. You can get the flue pulling via these unsealed bits rather than from the appliance itself.

    It acts as the gasket that seals the door of your stove as you close it.
