heard about these on ‘Farming Today’ on R4 earlier.

sounded bloomin’ scary – particularly with respect to food crops.

According to Wiki Arion vulgaris has been here since 1954.

But with conditions becoming optimal for them we can expect a population explosion. What will eat them?

I really can’t stand slugs – mice, spiders etc are all fine but I have been known to cross the road to avoid slugs. I would probably pass out if I saw one of these…..!

Killer slugs that don’t actually kill anything – excellent naming by the telegraph!

    They canibalise themselves. That’s killing.

I doubt they actively kill each other, I’ve only ever seen slugs eating dead slugs. I also have them eating cat sh1t in the garden.

Time to but some nematoads for the spring if I want any home grown veg this year, last year was fairly dire…

you people seem to be ignoring the major threat here:

the slightly smaller Spanish stealth slug

“slugninja” – I’m going to pitch for a hollywood movie !

    actually, that’s “El Slugninja” 8)

Frankly, a major blockbuster film about slugs is still going to have a faster moving plot than SPEED2………… 😉

I had millions of slugs in my garden last year, I just kept squishing them when I found them but they just kept coming…
I want to be better prepared this year – what can I do to prevent them coming? Rather than killing them when they get here.

We should let them eat garlic, we save time in the cooking process! 😉

telegraph once again proving that it is a joke when it comes to science reporting

obviously invading spanish slugs is very in keeping with their general xenophobia and hated of euros!

what can I do to prevent them coming

    Short of chaining-up a hedgehog or badger…?

But seriously, I doubt there’s very much you can do aside from lifting stones/bricks/out-of-the-way places and removing small groups of whiteish slimy balls and squishing (as you put it) those.

Conditions dictate how many we get, apparently. Personally, I think they’re a valuable little beastie, albeit a bit of slimy git…

I would be very surprised indeed to see these immigrants take on the Ash slugs in our garden..

Ours hunt in packs and have been known to take down small rodents, wild birds, next door’s guinea pigs and on at least one occasion an adventurous Border Terrier..

We’ve started breeding a small population of Quail in an effort to appease them..

Probably don’t want to Google the tree slug, then. Imagine that; a slug that climbs trees and just hangs there waiting for you to pass underneath…

My brother once woke up in the night to find himself biting into a slug that had slithered into his wide open snoring gob. Hahaha.
