  • MTB shorts for a tallish female

OK I’m fed up ordering shorts and sending them back as they never fit properly.

I’m 5’8″ size 8-10 in most women clothes. However, with a 27″ waist and 38″ hips (yep I’ve got a big ass!), and 33″ inside leg I just cannot get any that fit properly.

    Issues are…
    – either too short and gap between shorts hem and kneepads
    – buy a bugger size to fit over ass properly and wear a belt
    – buy guys shorts and know they will look ridiculous on hips but will fit length wise

So far, I have only one pair that are close to fitting, Dakine Mode in a Large.

Any suggestions out there from taller ladies (who may or may not also have a fat ass!)

And before anyone suggests solving the fat ass problem first, I’ve tried, cycling actually has made it bigger ……..

Most stw users will be stumped on the ‘female’ part of the question 😉

As a tall bloke I feel your pain in clothing that doesn’t fit. You just have to try the different brands in every shop you pass.

Ground Effect? Because their blokes’ kit is quite big. As they’re in NZ best to email.

I’m 5’7″ with 28″ waist and 32″ inside leg. Not sure about my hips, but yes have a cyclists bum 🙂

Have always used Ground Effect, which fit really well. They have an elasticated panel in the back which keeps them snug around the waist, and I have not had a problem with the length.

However not cheap (you can get charged a handling fee and tax on inport if you are unlucky) and only grey / black in colour…

    Details HERE

EDIT – Beaten to it by not quite so slowoldgit 🙂

Two of us here at 5′ 9″ with long inside legs. Used a mens and womens over the years with various results. Just bought a load of Scott ones for us at a steal of a price including the padded inners with the advantage that they fit in all the right places, also have adjusters on the waist bands. All baggies.

    Thanks all for the replies.

Mega – there is something sooo wrong with you LOL

Tracey – you are brilliant! Just ordered some from start cycles, brilliant prices and they’re not black! Will give these a go and hopefully problem sorted.

The OH has Troy Lee Designs women’s shorts, the skylines I think. She’s a similar height and has a non-small bottom 🙂

Sounds like what you’re looking for.

I’m not a girl, but i do have a fat arse*

and in that regard, my endura shorts fit pretty well and have a proper waistband with loops that will take a webbing belt. Size up to get over the big cushion and then strap the waistband down again is the way to go.

    * you need a big hammer if you want to knock in a long nail**

** more like a carpet tack, to be honest.

Steer clear of Race Face ones that’s for sure..!

I’m 5 ft 8 and usually a size 10 but have cycling thighs. Madison Mtec40 shorts were the best for me. They are three quarter length ones which cover my knee pads but don’t look too long. Washed really well too.

Would also recommend minx girl and Royal Racing shorts too based on friends!

My wife is the same height as you, not sure on her measurements, but she’s found SO many ladies shorts are definitely in the ‘short shorts are short’ camp. The men’s TLD Skyline are probably her favourites.

Hobnob yep should have said I have some men’s TLD skylines and they’re a perfect fit lengthwise. I prefer a slightly baggies fit but could always size up as they have adjustable waist Velcro.

The otherjonv – totally agree, always telling my OH that it’s my engine, that’s why he has to try to catch it going up the hills whereas I’ve no chance of catching him going down them (plus he accused me of cheating when I was faster down spooky woods in the snow).

Ks562 – thanks will have a look at the Madison’s. I’ve tried the royals (another pair just sent back today) but still slightly too short. I wear poc vpd pads which sit just above the knee, so really need shorts to sit just mid way across knee. My dakine are absolutely perfect in this regard, but it’s like the holy grail trying to find decent shorts that actually fit. I see loads of women out on the trails and many of them are of above average height so why is it so difficult to find shorts that fit properly….

I don’t think it’s just shorts, it’s ladies riding clothing in general. She’s always looking for jerseys that fit too. For the huge amount of brands, even those that specialise in ladies clothing, there are so many that fail to grasp the basic concept of what women want.

She’s got more men’s riding kit than woman’s, and she’s developed a hatred for anything pink, as clearly that’s what women want when riding and racing DH…

Yes agree it’s definitely cycling clothing in general. – mainly MTB. Chant see why some of the main brands don’t cotton on to this. Endura and altura seem to have a decent range although sizing is still very weird. With everyone else it seems to be a token gesture with a very small womens range meaning that anyone not of average size/height must walk about looking like they’re dressed in their granny’s hand me downs.

Glad it’s not just me who feels like this.

I’m 6ft 2 and struggle to get anything female design to fit!
Even mens stuff is hit and miss as I’m also a bit of a funny hip, waist and bum size too, between a 14/16 in jeans and a 36″ inside leg.
I rip shops apart trying to find anything to fit!

Probably because it’s a relatively small market.
Cycling shops would have to hold an enormous range of clothes to try to cater for the vast array of differing female human shapes, never mind also trying to cater for the differences in aesthetic or style taste.
A lot of female clothing tends to be ‘fitted’ too which I suppose compounds the problem over everyone wearing baggy tents.

For what it’s worth, it can be pretty difficult to find bloke clothing that fits great everywhere too, though with a much smaller share in an already small market, I appreciate that it’s a pain for ladies…
    Hope you get sorted op.
