Endura XXL is good for a 38-42" waist. People seem to complain about the quality but I haven't had any problems with my Zymes yet. One hole from a crash which is yet to get any bigger.

I've got some Enduras and some Alturas, I prefer the Alturas. I'm a 38 waist.

Ground Effect – NZ based company, but they deliver quickly and I have a couple if pairs of their shorts (Supertankers, Double Happys) which are years old and still going. The Supertankers are made of an incredibly hardwearing material – I've worn mine to dig out patio/build a deck this summer and all they have to show for it is a 1cm hole at the lower leg.

Try Tesco for cheap shorts and wear padded lycra underneath.

They're fine unless it rains because the cotton is a bit more clingy when wet than polyester.
