Does anyone know the best ‘offroad route’ to ride from Tynemouth to Sunderland? I am making a mtb loop and have never ridden over that way south of the river. It looks like there is a path along the coast which may be okay.

    By boat?

Whilst there is a cyclepath either via the ferry or the baltic it’s not what you’d call a mountain bike route and it’s not really that great…

My plan was to ride along to the Tyne tunnel from Tynemouth and go through there.

It may not be the best place to ride but I am trying to link up a big loop.

If tunnel then probably take the old railway line now cycle route which goes from tyne dock through to boldon. From there along to nissan and then cox green to cross the wear. Or if ferry then along to haven point and along the cliff tops to roker. This ride has elements of both.

I think the pedestrian tunnel is shut till Feb best bet may be to go over the river on the ferry. £1.60 single to south shields and head to sunderland along the sea front
