The gf and I are planning a road trip this summer. Involving a 1800 mile round trip to Slovenia. We’re taking the bikes. (for those interested a MC Zen & Orange 5) along to sample some of the scenery and have a good few days on the hills.

The tourist board seems to have a fair amount of locations & info listed. but does anyone have any good experiences/don’ts etc.

Any (literally any) info would be fantastic. particularly interested if anyone knows about chairlift opening (alá french alps in summer)

    Thanks!

Are you thinking bike park or trails?

I know the area around Maribor and both are available. The cable car runs all year round.

Oh and Slovenia is ace but don’t tell anyone ok

    I have been to the town of Bovec in the Julian Alps on the Italian border, you actually travel through Italy for a bit to get there;

Good bike shop in Bovec village centre does hire and guiding/DH days.
I got a tourist walking map, hired a bike and just went exploring on the walking trails which are good. Be prepared for some hike`a bike tho. Lots of the marked cycle trails are rough roads or farm tracks.

http://www.bohinj.si/en Stunning, quiet area of Slovenia, been twice. Not much in the way of mountain biking as we know it, lots of cycle routes which take you through scenic villages via farm tracks and rough roads. Spectacular regardless. Rarely see a “decent” mtb but believe there is a local “scene” although I never saw any sign of them. The hills(mountins)around this area are BIG and after a walk or two decided the only bikes for hire were not up to “proper” off-roading so just stuck to the scenic waymaked routes which can be fun in places.
Depends when you are going it does get very warm and thunder storms are frequent in these aereas. Think you may be a bit overbiked with the 5 for the majority of riding tho

Stayed in Dreznica (up the mountain above Kobarid, just round the corner from Bovec), but rode mostly around the Bovec area and along the Soca valley. Stunning scenery. If it was good enough for Narnia, then it’s good enough for me. Routes came from / were inspired by a German guide book (not sure if it’s been translated to English yet).

Stayed at Dixi’s place near Prevalje/Mezica for a couple of days 2yrs ago. Recommended. As was the underground ride thru the old mine. Was in ST mag a few years back too.

Stayed in Maribor last year. In the nice cake+icecream coffee shop guesthouse. Also recommended.

Can’t wait to go back… but it won’t be this year.

Ignore that, a Five will be fine. I’m guessing someone missed the good stuff.

What others have said; Chairlifts means Maribor, Kranska Gora or Bovec.

Dixie’s place is not worth missing. Soca valley makes you earn your descents but they are so worth it

Tolmin has a great little bike shop if you need anything and if you ask Marko (another Marko) in there nicely he might just suggest some great days out.

Lastly check http://www.mtb.si it’s the best mtb mag in Slovenia…

Maribor has good riding. And the A+E department there is really good 🙂

Beautiful beech forests. And the DH track is pretty friendly without the tape on it.

    Nice country.

Kransjka Gora over the valley from Bovec is worth a visit, lovely part of the world.
