Had a bike stolen, making a claim.

    What can I expect?
Really, I want the cash in order to pick out my own replacement (and to my own needs). Is that likely to happen?

You will be contacted by wheelies http://www.wheelies.co.uk/ and asked to pick a bike to your value of claim.

My bike was a custom build, not matching anything they could supply. I asked then to supply a like for like bike. I was offered a cash settlement a few days later.

I ended up getting a quote from a specialist stockist (as it was santa cruz). I got a cheque made out in the name of the bike shop or I could have paid up front and been credited the money after supplying the reciepts.

Didn't seem like cash was an option when I claimed that was nearly 3 years ago now.

My claim was settled in sept 2009.

Excellent service – bikes nicked 2 days before going to the Alps – explained the situation to them and they let me buy the bikes from my LBS sraight away – they coughed up within 5 days of the claim being made!

As above – wheelies will say – "this is the bike we think for a replacement" – if you don't like that one you can pick one of equal value. If they can't provide a bike that is a replacement for yours as its custom build then you get the value of the bike as a cheque. However if you want cash but wheelies can provide a bike of equivalent spec then you have to accept a smaller sum. 90% of value IIRC.

But they couldn't provide like for like so I got the full claim. 8)

    Yeah, mine too.
I spent a while getting it right, so it's slightly galling to be on the hunt again.

That said, in the process of, I do have a better idea of what I want to replace it. And a few off the shelf ones wouldn't be bad starting points…

It's the daily commuter, so I'd rather it was replaced sooner than later, tho' I can cope without it for the time being.

Cheers for the info, guys 🙂

I made a claim with them for my stolen Yeti, they transfered the full claim amount direct to my bank within a week! Awesome service!

Stick to your guns. You do not have to accept a smaller sum.

Anyone experienced hiked renewal quotes having made a claim?

Hmm, Kona Sutra or the Genesis Croix De Fer aren't actually too far off what I want.
Although both with some deliberate mistakes, and both requiring wheelset changes…

But maybe it'll all work out without too much faff and extra expense.

i went with m and s recently, fingers crossed i don;t need to claim but my worry would be that i have a mainstream brand but a pretty unique frame, hopefully i wouldnt get fobbed off 🙁

Can I just ask, I've asked before but having actually taken out insurance recently with M&S its concerning me more….

I haven't specified the bikes I own, I have just ticked the 'possessions away from the home option'….is this right, as most insurance companies I've been with have required the bikes listing as specific items? Couldn't see any options to list my bikes when I took out the policy.

    It wont.

I cracked my Hustler, and tried to claim, and got told I couldn't as in their eyes it was "fair wear and tear".. 😐

    Did I get fobbed off?

If I did, then I may go back and try again???

As long as they're under £4000 (each) you don't need to list them separately.

Not quite sure what'll happen if my Top Fuel goes, at retail it's £5500, but I paid far less than that, and could get a replacement for less too, be interesting to see what Wheelies would come up with!

It would be useful to have some evidence of your bikes – I have a series of photos of mine showing the detail of components.

However the one claim I made they just accepted my word for it.

Hi Aidy, sorry to hear your bike got nicked.

Was it in London or from your house?

Been wondering about this for a while, as its renewal time for me. Thanks TJ!

We had our bikes nicked just before xmas (4 in total ) the claim was settled within a week and a figure agreed with wheelies direct who were excellent. The only snag was waiting for a 2010 small zesty to come into the country which we knew about so no probs , the rest were all customs builds ie yeti, genesis Ti etc with a mix of King/ hope stuff . absolutley not hassle. I can't praise M&S and Wheelies (Tredz) enough . The claim was for 4 x 4k max +spares etc , didn't even ask for photos or proof of purchase. Also they paid out on a 575 rear swing arm that i broke whilst out in les Arcs last summer on holiday .
