Need to replace the clutch on my T4 transporter..

    Are they ok ?

Worried about them fitting cheap and nasty parts though expect they’d be no different to elsewhere.

    Any experiences ?

    its a franchise.

    some good some bad.

my local one has a terrible reputation so wouldnt get my car.

not all clutches are made equal either – id want a decent clutch and also there are many other items in there – seals and linkages that are best changed while its split or you end up creating extra work – again these need to be good quality items.

Look up your locals reviews on tinternet…. usualyl pretty revealing. take with a pinch of salt – 1 or 2 bad reviews to be expected….. but not the majority.

After watching Paul Calfs ” Three Fights, Two weddings and a funeral” I thought Mr Clutch was a pi** take.

IIRC there’s a good VW independent in Pompey near the footy ground. I can’t remember their name and Google isn’t showing anything. Perhaps a trip over and ask around?

Terrible… Huge staff turn over, poorly paid that could give 2 **** about your car.
Find a local VW specialist. After you get a price give a few VW main dealers a call clutches are one of those items that main dealers “sometimes” try to match independents to get the work. It’s worth the call anyway.

    Does it still drive OK
I work next to a garage staffed by a VW Transported fanboi who would probably do it for a swervy deal
You would have to supply your own clutch kit
New Alresford and I have a lovely 3hr loop to keep you entertained whilst he does the mucky bit if its a saturday afternoon job.

Can ask on Monday if you like , but Mr Clutch are cheap for a reason

Not even that cheap…..was 50 quid in it between mr clutch and my local independant ( not a vw)

I had him do the main seal , clutch cable and gear linkages with dealer sourced parts in thst price so well worth the 50 quid

As said above, they are franchised. They vary enormously – some are appalling, but others are even worse.
The one in Pompey is one of the better branches, but I still wouldn’t trust them to fit a tyre valve cap, let alone a clutch.
Like most of the chain type garages they seem to prey on people who don’t know any better.

Any decent local outfit should be able to do it on any of the T4 variants, even if its had a 1.9 TDI transplant.

    Thanks for the replies

I obviously have reservations about using them .. Hence my post I guess.

Problem is Mr Clutch are quoting £335 as opposed to my local garage charging ..£620

    Oof!

I suspect I’ll need mine doing soon. Have been working myself up to having a crack on my own. Any spannerists like to comment on the difficulty of the job? Assuming you can work off the road etc.

Avoid, if you manage to find a branch that manages to fit the clutch without doing more damage, you will find that the clutch lasts about 10miles/5 days longer than the warranty and then expires.

Soft cheese is harder wearing than the clutches they fit

    Ok so here’s my options

    Mr clutch – £330
    Independent garages x2 -1st £500
    Second – £600
Main dealer – £870 ( incl) new flywheel

Blimey I’m not usually indecisive but what a wide range of prices …???
