Moved into our new home on Monday (its not a new house, 1970s built) but its quite cold. The previous owners moved out middle of last week so switched heating off. Friend of the wife said if we left central heating on all day at a medium temperature we would warm the bricks up and would mean the house will be warmer in the future, even after a day of not having heating on during the day.
Is that possible? How long do bricks and blocks retain heat for?
Yup they do get cold if left and take a little while to warm up.
It'll take more than a day given the weather were having. I have a simlar house with heating on low constantly which was fine until the past couple of days. All the rads working ok?

The boiler in my house died at the weekend, the house (pretty well insulated mid-terrace) stayed comfortably warm for about another 36 hours or so.
Now it's just bloody freezing. 
Boiler part "on order" so the nice Mr Gasman told me.
Had a boiler breakdown a couple of years ago in January. We had no heating for four days and it was bloody cold outside and in. Had to leave the heating on "warm" when out and "hot" when in, for about two days (and nights) before the fabric of the building warmed up and it actually felt nice and warm (by Mrs GreenK's personal thermostat). It's a modern house , too, that's normally a doddle to heat.
Turn the stat up and leave it on you tight git. Hope you have unpacked the kettle, mugs and tea bags for when i come around.

We just moved from a 1991 3-bed semi, with new double glazing, cavity wall insulation, new boiler, etc. into a 1920s semi- with draughty windows and doors, solid walls, old boiler and naff all insulation. Chilly.

Of course this theory is sound. Imagine putting a brick in an oven and getting it hot - how long will it radiate heat for?
And Economy 7 heating works on that sort of principle too - cheap leccy at night warming stone in the rad which then radiates the heat during the next day even though it isn't being heated.
But I have to agree with the appropriately named scardypants - check the cellar and roof void...

we've lost the key to our gas meter, my housemates are convinced the estimated bill will have been correct and we've had a bargain winter sweating in our boxxers and t-shirts with the thermostat set at 25degC 24/7 (I was out voted, I'm happy at 18degC, just for the morning and evening).

A previous occupant in our house committed suicide. There's a piece of frayed rope hanging from a beam in the bottom garage that my wife is convinced is where he did it.
Use a pair of pliers to open it? And then use the same ones to torture your housemates for not listening to you...
You've re-watched saw too many times. I'm tempted to lie and tell them it's £2.5k or something ridiculous. Although I'm genuinely bricking myself that it may be that high, it's a big 4 bed, 70's built detatched house with as far as I can tell SFA insulation.
Can't watch that sh*t though. The ideas came right out of my own head which is probably more worrying for those close to me...
