Mountain biking in Colorado in January? Too snowy?

I was going to answer this with really sarcastic question....
You do know that mountain biking is what happens in ski resorts outside th ski season don't you? They have lots of snow in Steamboat Springs. Their season is until April and they have nearly 10 metres of snow a year.

I was in CB three summers ago and the trails weren't open at the end of June!
Expecting to bike in Jan is extremely optimistic....

Winter Park isn't far away, and got almost 350 inches of snow last season. Just enjoy the skiing, the snow is incredibly awesome.

If you want to make the treck over to Fruita, depending on the winter in any given year, you might be able to get some riding in. I don't know what the weather up that way has been, but if it is anything like we are experiencing in New Mexico, probably not good odds. Just checked and the forecast for the next 10 days in Fruita is sunny, mid-40's F temp wise. Some parts of Colorado haven't gotten as much snow this year---we seem to be getting the majority in New Mexico.

I take it someone nice is paying for your trip.
I know if I was going that far and paying that much for a snowboarding trip I'd be on the slopes from first to last lift every day without fail. Depends what you call driving distance - Utah might have some riding.

I just talked to someone in Montrose, CO (not far from Fruita) and the Fruita area hasn't had a lot of snow, so might be work checking when you are there---of course it could get buried by snow in Jan. It's about 3-3 1/2 hour drive from Steamboat to Fruita.

I did Moab in mid February and found the Shafer Trail off Island In the Sky, Poison Spider and Slickrock were all dry with no snow. Porcupine Rim was a no-go, the start looked like the Crest Run, so I rode down the dirt road and did Slickrock instead....awesome ride and no-one else out that day! You sign a book when you enter the Slickrock, just so they can identify the corpses later.
