Well i quite want a cross bike… so i have a thought, why not just turn my GT avalanche thing into a cross bike.

    I will need:
    New rigid forks
    Drop bars
    Avid BB7 brakes
    New tires

Think i’ll just stick with 26″ wheels for now. Want it to be a cheap project.

If anybody has one built like this, show us yours to give me some ideas.

    Any problems with the idea?

Soon to be available from Sam at Singular Cycles.

    The Gryphon 29er.

If you’re fitting drop bars, you’ll probably want to fit a short and high-rise stem too. Otherwise, riding on the hoods will be a massive stretch (stem + about 8-9cm) and the drops will be very low (about 14cm below your stem)

If this is to be geared with drop bars, you’ll need new shifters. STI are the thing but very expensive. Bar-end shifters might be worth looking at instead.

Skinny tyres without the extra diameter of a 700c wheel might not be great. bigger wheels make for a smoother ride which slightly off-sets the bumpiness of the skinny hard tyres.

Thanks for that gingerflash, never thought about the bars/stem issues.

I’m going SS just for the pure simplisity/cheapness of it, and i already have all the parts.

I also have some 1.5 conti tyres at home, so could fit them and see what it is like. Right, off i pop to classified i think.

Thanks. More pics would be cool!

As GF pointed out you’ll need to run a shorter /upright stem.
Like this one i had on my Monkey.

singular gryphon has a longer head tube so you don’t have to run a gash looking stem….here’s mine…

Thanks for the pics guys! Noticed that the drop bars look different to normal roadie drop bars. What kind should i be looking out for?

Grant it did look a bit odd with that setup. T’was only ever an experiment while i waited for the Gryphon though.

The jones is good mate. Might take it out tonight.
