  • Most random (+ dull) question of the day – Do actuaries use algorithms?

Sorry, it’s a super weird question – but I have reached the outer limits of my mathematical knowledge by identifying that there are actuaries in the world and that there are algorithms, that make Google work…

What I want to know is whether or not algorithms are core to doing actuarial science?

    Does anyone know?

    Thanks!

Algorithms tend to be a little more exciting

I would say not, as algorithms provide an absolute definitive answer to a problem. Actuaries use statistical models any optimisation thereof is most likely to be heuristic rather than algorithmic in nature.

Is there another question behind that?

Do you want be an actuary, but hate algorithms, and wonder if you can get by without them?

GJP talks sense, but they use algorithms too 🙂
