War of the Worlds (50s version) – Remember seeing this as a kid and loving the Martian ships. Utterly alien and menacing.

Alien – John Hurt’s indigestion scene and the first time we clearly see the telescopic jaws. Was waaaay too young, the first time I saw this.

The Thing – all of it.

Turbo dancing with his broom. If you squinted hard, you couldn’t see the fishing line attached to it. 😆

There’s something about the Imperial Star Destroyer coming into frame overhead at the start of the original Star Wars film that’s still pretty mind blowing. Perhaps it’s because it’s an actual physical model but it just seems far more real and substantial that CGI.

Aw, hell-yes.

I must’ve watched that movie a hundred times on VHS and still shat it every single time at that scene. In special effects terms, nothing special, but a true triumph of editing.

The transformation scene was pretty ground-breaking. Haven’t seen it recently; wonder how well it stands up?

Jaws, watched it far too young, I’ve been paranoid about swimming in the sea for at least 35 years… Yes, even in the UK!

Salems Lot and American Werewolf in London from above are on the list.

Probably the Werewolf as they really scared the cr@p out of me as a kid, Oliver Reed was in a Hammer werewolf film and there was a Hammer House of Horror episode that had werewolves and gave me nightmares for weeks. Parents banned me from Werewolf films for a bit.

The green faced witch in the wizard of Oz, put me off brunettes for about 30 years…

For some reason with American Warewolf, I remember the hands most of all:

Was a big Jaws fan at the time.Years later and married we saved for Orlando/Disney World and went on the Jaws boat ride.My wife to this day has not forgotten the look of disappointment on my face when this rough rubber robotic shark creaked its head out of the water and fell back in.Dont know what i was expecting but i never saw the special effects for that film in the same light ever again.

gingefella- the robo shark was very problematic on the Jaws set- “[Richard] Zanuck and [David] Brown were very stingy producers, so everyone kept telling them, ‘You’re gonna need a bigger boat.’ It became a catchphrase for anytime anything went wrong — if lunch was late or the swells were rocking the camera, someone would say, ‘You’re gonna need a bigger boat.'”

Roy Scheider, who played Brody in the movie, ad-libbed the line at different points in his performance throughout filming.

On a less scary note, Star Trek 2, Wrath of Khan; the final fight between the ships in the Mutara Nebula is a beautiful set piece.

Pretty much anything from John Carpenters the thing, but notably the dog in the kennels, and the walking head. The terminator cutting out its damaged eye.

I also used to stare in wonder at those Ray Harryhausen effects as a nipper and that Jaws head scene gave me nightmares. Swimming in the sea in Bournemouth never felt the same after watching that film.
