Oh yes… Ice Cold in Alex. Top film in every way.

Whilst Apocalypse Now is probably my favouritest film ever, it’s not a boys own classic. There’s far too much weird shit going on for that. It will mess you mind up.

Boy Own requires: Gadgets, action, cool hero, heroine, explosions, guns, none of that smooshy love interest rubbish.

Like… Shooter. The Longest Day. That sort of thing.

A boys own film should be all about heroics, action, danger and adventure. I agree with rudeboy; Heroes of Telemark would take some beating. True story, too.
After that, the bourne films and Indiana Jones would be very boys own.

I definitely agree with a lot of the films already mentioned:

    Ice Cold in Alex
    Where Eagles Dare
The Man Who Would be King
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    The Thirty Nine Steps

    But I’ll add:

    The Wooden Horse
    Jason and the Argonauts
    Barry Lyndon
    The Duellists
    Dersu Uzala
    Shout at the Devil
    Gallipoli

I’ll still stick with my suggestion of – The Adventures of Tom Sawyer[/i] as a classic ‘boy’s own’ movie

    I’ll add

    National Treasure
Treasure Island – the Robert Newton one

Right, i’m back on this thread, it seems that whilst i was away some more folk have started to get the idea of what i meant by ‘boys own’. I’m not old enough to have read the comic – but the phrase to me means something more than just ‘action film with cars and guns and stuff’, and i dont mean that ‘chicks don’t dig it’ either

Some classics been mentioned but i kind of like the suggestion of national treasure – as there havn’t been many modern ‘boy’s own’ films made, i guess the indy films are in with a shout too, though that last one was a bit poor

Brokeback Mountain was not about cowboys, it was about shepherds. Just thought I’d clear that up.

Regarding “boys own” movies (whatever that means…):

    Goodfellas
    Resevoir Dogs
    The Warriors
    Four Brothers
    Battle Royale
    Hard Boiled
The Departed (or Infernal Affairs if you want the original hong kong movie)
    Sahara

For a Boy’s Own, you can’t beat High Road to China. Funny as well.

    Right

93 year old (according to RudeBoy) back on here to correct misconceptions with a bit of historical accuracy

Has anybody on this thread actually read “Boys’ Own”?

Regarding “boys own” movies (whatever that means…):

That last post just about sums it up!

    Cos I have

And although I like tits (a lot) there were no tits in Boys Own. Almost every film suggested fails the basic test:

A Boy’s Own film deals in some way with the British Empire

So: Zulu; Breaker Morant; the Four Feathers: the Thirty-Nine Steps; The Man Who Would be King; Beau Geste (French Empire here, of course)

Most of the posters on here just don’t get it because they haven’t read Boy’s Own.

However, Baden-Powell’s “Scouting for Boys” (oooh err Matron) is in print and will give the ignorant some sort of starting point for defining a true “Boy’s Own” film
