Last week – connected to the hotel network fine.

    This week – nothing.

Nothing’s changed their end, so could a windows update have messed something about? It should auto detect the channel and the like.

If I were to guess I’d say it’s timing out whilst trying to get a dhcp lease. I get the little blue circle spinning for about 20 secs then an error message.

Can you do a scan to see what other access points are around?

That would tell you if the 802.11 layer is working.

If you suspect dhcp, you could try doing “ipconfig /release” and then “ipconfig /renew” in a dos window. It used to make a difference back in the day.

Only one network here. It also worked fine at home…

Perhaps it’s not dhcp then because my adapter is not connected…

If it ain’t connecting, then it won’t know about any dhcp servers, so renewing a lease that it hasn’t got won’t do anything

Turn off wireless, then back on and scan to see what it can see

You won’t get an IP address until it’s authenticated to the access point. It’s not something as silly as a changed WEP / WPA key is it?

Done all the obvious stuff like restarting the adapter and the whole computer.

The hotel has not changed anything their end

    Everyone else’s works

    Mine works at home.

It’s an open and unsecured network – one of those hotel ones where you have to enter a passcode on the special page, which I don’t even get to.

If you do an ipconfig, what IP address is it showing?

Have you got any “internet security” software that might be buggering it about?

Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0x00215DAA4EB0. The following error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

That is the MAC of the wireless card.

So I was right with my vague guess – DHCP.

There are loads of tunnel adapters in the list from ipconfig. Something to do with firewalls etc? I recently uninstalled Kaspersky and installed MSE – dunno if that’s got something to do with it.

Still in the Aviator ? If so don’t they have “a man” who can sort it ?

Its our nasty south east high speed networking not letting you connect, as your adaptor is too hesitant and slow!….. 😆

Have you tried a “repair” on the wireless adaptor/network connection? (right-click on the network connection icon in the system tray).
That’s worked for me before when turning off/on hasn’t done anything.

The Aviator do have a support person but not at 9pm. The girl said that they’d get him to have a look today, but I suspect it’s just my laptop so the admin person’s would probably work.

    Reinstalling drivers now.

Might (or might not) be worth disabling IPv6 and trying it.
