OK, following on form my thread the other day, I’m desperate for some guidance!

Bike is a BMW F650 Dakar (single), 2002. Been running perfectly up until …
    – battery started struggling so assumed it was on its way out
    – new battery installed, started immediately, idled fine
    – left it overnight just to check if any drain on the battery (multimeter suggested 1.5mA)
    – went to start in the morning – for this bike, you turn the ignition on and get 3 lights on the dash, mustn’t press the starter button until the water temp light goes out (takes 5-10 secs). That morning, the water temp did not come on
    – waited 10 secs and then pressed starter button, cranked v happily but not firing (as tho out of petrol)
    – wiggling the key, wires by the battery and also adding a second battery achieved same result (always just 2 lights on the dash, not 3)

    So since then I have:
    – checked battery terminals – v clean
    – changed fuel pump relay (or at least a relay that when pulled out, doesn’t allow the bike to crank over)
    – found there’s no power at the fuel pump with ignition on or when cranking over (carb completely dry)
    – have directly put battery to fuel pump and it whirred away
    – spark plug connection and plug v clean
    – pulled off and on every obvious electrical connection
    – checked very obvious fuse

I dont know if the fuel pump fuse or relay is hidden somewhere else (but suspect not).

So guessing that coincidentally the power wire to the fuel pump has broken – assuming, that it powers up when the ignition is switched on.

The wiring is neat but all taped up so will be a big old pain to undo and get to. Anything else I should look for?

    Thanks

Can you temporarily wire from the battery to the fuel pump to get you up and running ?

Surely you’d be better putting this on one of the BMW owner forums?

I suspect that your ECU is confused if its not getting a signal from the water/air temp

If its anything like certain cars if the ECUs not getting the signals it wants it cant configure the starting settings and so wont send firing signal to the injectors/fuel pump so fuel is cut. Ie will turn over to hearts content.

Edit. 30 seconds on google says

Switch on ignition. (The BMS unit carries out a self test at this time, checking that it is receiving it’s signalling data. This includes throttle position!, engine and air intake temp. It will then calculate the exact inject time required for when the starter button is depressed). Saying that you had to “wait for the light to go out” was just a way of ensuring customers did not hit the button too quickly! (ergo, if you wait for the temperature light to go out that’s probably long enough to complete the self-test. ed.)

so unlikely its even related to the temp light but the BMS self test – and potentially one of those sensors….

    and from the same site…

Should the temp light come on when you turn the ignition to the on position?

Both the temp light and the oil light should come on on the GS and CS, (the temp light for 3 – 5 seconds then the temp light should go out). Not forgetting the neutral light if the bike’s in neutral. Trevor#999
On a FI GS/CS the temp light will not come on when you turn on the ignition if the bike’s side stand is down and you are in gear (unless you pull in the clutch lever).

thanks (and thanks again weekly, much appreciate your input as per last time)

    – Tempted to try what weeks suggests … slightly apprehensive tho of shorting fuel pump out!
    – Have got this on F650 forum but surprisingly, a slower and simpler response to date – hopefully more will come
    – I did wonder about the ECU as it just seems odd/extremely coincidental that it worked Sat night with new battery installed fine, and then Sunday morning, the 3rd light didnt show and not firing up. I have disconnected the ECU for 1 hr and reinstalled. It did have a little bit of blue corrosion on a couple of pins, scrape with a screwdriver and a dash of WD40. But no change.

Is there a better way to restore/check the ecu?

Problem here is Aus, we can advise and give thoughts, but consdiering it’s your work transport it may just be easier/quicker to get someone who’s an Auto elec to sort for you ?

trailrat – thanks, picking up your edit now.

    So I should check/wiggle:
    – the side stand switch
    – air intake sensor (lambda sensor?)

    anything else?

wiggle by all means but i would be testing resistance with my multi meter against previously googled correct values for the componant.

Thottle position sensor and intake sensor too …

    + what weeksy says.

weekly – agree. Phoned a couple up who declined – too much hassle! Plus popped into 1 BMW garage and 1 BMW specialist who dont pick up, but were largely disinterested. I really appreciate the advice and input from all on here, I’m learning heaps so will do what’s suggested above checking resistance. Often the challenge is identifying where each component is!

But I always feel motivated after getting a few pointers here!

And people wonder why businesses are struggling and closing.

The simple fact is… many are just lazy buggers.

how ever the flip side that sticks in my mind from my days in the service industry is that people are not willing to pay for the time it takes to properly diagnose and fix faults like this.

hence they stick to doing the safe and easy work.

On a FI GS/CS the temp light will not come on when you turn on the ignition if the bike’s side stand is down and you are in gear (unless you pull in the clutch lever).

Whether it is FI or not please check the sidestand and clutch switches , as well as the main kill switch – all of these will cause a no start .

I would be looking to test/change the temp sensor too , as you have noticed a change in behaviour there.

    good luck

My SV650 (carb version) started doing all sorts of very weird things and it was traced back to a corroded wire which had blown the regulator and rectifier unit. Happened at Thurso where I was working the day after a 8 hour ride up there.

If I remember rightly backfiring, indicators doing their own thing starter motor doing its own thing etc etc….

I think the issue is due to your changing the battery. When I had a R1200S, it had to have a new battery and I remember reading somewhere that if the battery was disconnected a set of protocols had to be applied to reset everything. Due to the stupid location of the battery, under the petrol tank, I got a local m/c garage to sort it all for me.

A quick bit of Googling found this snippet –

Does the F650 need a Throttle Position Sensor reset after the battery is re-connected, like the R1200 engines? (Ignition on, throttle opened fully and closed three times before starting) Failure to reset will not usually keep an R1200 from starting, but it will run better sooner if the procedure is followed.

Have you tried the Forums at http://www.thebmwclub.org.uk or bmriders club? There’s loads of advice there.

UKGSER forum – ukgser.com – They know everything! I used to have a 650 Dakar and found that forum to be the Singletrack equivalent.

Is the bike equipped with a device that stops the fuel pump after an accident or if tipped on it’s side?
I’m sure I read about this on a Honda forum years ago.
