honestly, what's the ratio of good v tripe in the TV series?
I know it's subjective, and all down to personal taste - but in the series' there must only be perhaps 10 sketches i loved.....

If you're viewing it simply as a series of sketches then you've completely missed what it was about. I guess that, if I watched it now, it would all seem less funny than it was when first shown.

You did well to get to 10 - and I own the book of the scripts!
If you watch Morecambe and Wise TV series, they are the same, moments of genius among a lot of average stuff. Makes you realise how good the Christmas Specials were.
The older I get, the more I appreciate the genius that was Ronnie Barker....

You've got to look at stuff like this in context.
These days, a newsreader sitting at a desk in a field would be nothing unusual in a comedy programme.
Back then it was revolutionary.Got to agree with MoreCashThanDash though.
If you look up any of the classics like Morecombe & Wise, Les Dawson or Tommy Cooper on Youtube for example, you soon realise how little good stuff they did in a career that lasted decades.Posted 1 year ago # -
I bought the DVD box set with all the episodes, years ago (14 DVDs worth).
There are moments of sheer genius of course but, honestly, there is a shocking amount of chaff with the wheat.

I watched it when it was originally broadcast, bear in mind that there were only 3 TV channels at the time and it really was "something completely different".

Probably depends on your age.
I remember Monty Python as the highlight of the TV week, Life of Brian as the funniest film I ever saw, the books as illicit goods to be smuggled into school, and the audio tape(!!!) of The Holy Grail as the source of much classroom banter and in jokes in the classroom.
And of course the heritage of Ripping Yarns, The Ruttles, Fawlty Towers, many of the films by Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam, A Fish called Wanda etc, etc have all helped to keep the memory alive.
Which may be why I remember vast tracts of it with such fondness.

Some moments of absolute comedy genius makes some of the ropey stuff acceptable.
(thinks 'funniest joke ever written' and 'disarming a man armed with a banana' as two of my faves ever).

Some of it really has lasts well whereas not the nine o'clock news which was also essential viewing hasn't.
