Absolute pain in the royal arse! To anybody on here who’s planning even a simple house build, tread carefully when pricing. Holding the whole trade to ransom at the minute!

Can’t criticise their poor quality work as they’ll walk off site and will have found another job by dinner time.

    They should bring back Grunters.

    That’d learn ’em.

Our builder said that materials generally are in short supply.
    Timber, insulation, tiles.
Builders all trying to secure supplies with suppliers.
Suppliers limiting how much each builder can have.

We live in a capitalist world, supply and demand.
Still doesn’t make it any better when your getting screwed.

Ah well, when the building trade Eventually learns that modular/prefab construction is the future, they’ll be out on their barely covered arses

It is coming, but its not as easy as you might be led to believe. We’ve been trying it for years and unless you’re looking at 200+ units in high density or are prepared to have homogeneity in your cities and towns with lower density then off-site doesn’t quite stack up.

Hold on – what about all these EU workers driving prices down?

Don’t tell me that was all bullshit too?!

My builder bloke who I have known for 25 years charges me 140 per day that’s mates rates even in the North.

You can pay 200 quid a day for a sparky round here

I’m sure brick laying is harder than it looks, but just how hard is it? Or is the thing of bring an in demand brickie about being fast to an okay standard rather than slower, but to a higher standard?

bricklaying like many things in the building trade is easy to do slowly. To do it at a reasonable rate to a decent standard takes a lot of practice

How many bricks would you expect them to lay in a day?

Edit: looks like 200-500 per day depending on complexity and labourer

140£ a day self employed is dirt cheap day rate for any skilled worker

Until your back goes and you’re not qualified for anything else. A good brickie is worth every penny.

As scary as it seems that is the going rate.
£500 per 1000 around here which is £30/m2.
For a 5 day working week your only having to lay 6.67m2 or 400 brick a day.
Wishing I’d learned a trade back in the day…
