Morgan, good choice. I’m 42 and feeling the need to return to an 80’s hothatch/group b rally car (have a bit more money these days) 🙂

Ive found some realy nice deseamed hot hatches very 80’s. I would go mad for a mk1 xr2 if it came up at the right price.

If I were having another crisis, I’d be putting my hand in my pocket for this.

Nice, but I raise you the Mk1 that’s in the fast and furious 6 film. Seen the trailer this week and wanted it. If I knew how to post pictures on ths ipad I’d put it up, but you’ll have to google it.

Since when has an xr2 been a hot hatch? It was only tepid when new!

I’d say the 4 door Mk2 1600 Sport I had was the rarest and the lustierest.

We will all be disapointed when they have it dubbed to sound like a jap car that has 27 forward gears a turbo and a dump valve ….. Instead of the distinctive bwwapp bwaaap bwapppp pulsing throttle as the driver fights using his skill to keep it out of the hedge.

    T4 2.5tdi.
    -tinted
    -lowered
-some ridiculous new rims (I saw chrome spinners on one the other week!)
    -remapped
    -loud farty exhaust
    -daft bonnet bra
    -combi-van or camper interior.

(I have a totally stock/unmolested t4 caravelle but am only 35. A mate who is a lot closer to 40 seems to have the above plans for mine however…)

Make it a midlife crisi man-project vehicle which you can also cart your bikes and mates around in, for the same fuel and insurance costs as your midlife crisis Winkie substitute! Winner!

    Morgan, good choice. I’m 42

morgans are great, really basic… but fun. the drive is like nothing else, the way the chassis pulls you into the apex of the bend. best bit is that in your 40s you are a super young morgan driver. i’ve had mine since being 42 or 43, i feel like a teenager in it compared to the usual owner.

    Tsk tsk.

The Mk 2 was about THE ugliest golf ever.

    Its Mk 1 or nothing.

I hope my life never gets so boring that i consider a t4 a midlife crisis vehicle.

I’ve always hankered after a Fiat Uno Turbo ie. Not sure why I think it’s the word Turbo and because they look very functional and sort of ugly in a good way. Seem pretty rare of the bay though. Apparently they’re are still made / recently been made in some country and original new spares are cheap and plentiful. Almost bought a Mk1 Black fiesta Super Sport as my first car. Still remember it vividly. Passed though. Seemed too immaculate in some areas and suspected it as being repaired heavily at the front end iirc.

Might be worth getting hold of a practical classics or retro rides magazine – would give you loads of ideas. My local Tescos stock both.

mk2 and mk1 escorts are great in theory but tbh I’d want to sink a fair chunk into one to get something sound although you may get lucky.

I am no expert but I guess early VW’s are built to last and look great even in lesser forms with the correct treatment.I’d go for a mk2 golf most likely but I am sure other VW’s are great too.

Might be worth looking at some of the 1980’s/ 1990’s jap hot hatches or coupes too if this is your chosen path.

Erm have you seen a Mk3?

However I would agree that the Mk1 is the golf to go for.

There must be other VW’s that are good’uns other than the golf?

I see some pretty mean looking Polo’s ( although newer )

Alfa 105 GT converted to GTAesque specification by Alfaholics with a 6 speed sequential gearbox, welded cage with polished finish, retro leather bucket seats, uprated suspension + brakes and a 225bhp engine for the lolz. Keeping the original GTA steering wheel and trim for the character and the body resprayed in a gorgeous deep shiny red. Nomnomnom

    What a beast.

Lancia Delta Integrale was a bit of a tool also.

But given the choice…Mk1 1.8 Golf GTi.

    Or a Mk2 Escort RS2000.

    Choices choices… 😉
