This Leftfield Essential Mix from 1994 is quite special, holds up incredibly well now – especially the middle section from 40-odd minutes in…

The guy who uploaded it has done an amazing job of including all the labels of the records in the video, fading in as they’re mixed in.

Who can forget the stunning opening to Pete Tong’s first Essential Mix album. This is up there with the best from the time

Remember listening to one of my big brother’s recordings of a Nick Warren Essential Mix from Radio 1. This stuck out and although I never Knew its name or heard it since, the harmony from this song would float in to my life every now and then. Two months ago I tracked it down and got it’s name. THOSE WERE THE DAYS!

As a side note, and a reflection of how society and music has changed, WTF HAS RADIO 1 BECOME! THE ESSENTIAL MIX STUFF WAS AT THE FRONT OF AN ENIGMATIC AND CUTTING EDGE YOOF/YOUNGISH ADULT CULTURE!

But I mostly ended up going to the crap club in Guildford so I ended up liking stuff like this…

That Golden Girls tune above was done by one of the Orbital blokes, which I only just found out reading the comments on YT.

I saw Empirion do a set at a Festival in Bradford last year.

It was a little bit dull and looked like two bored accountants sat at their laptops 🙂

Only a short intro video but these guys were incredibly entertaining:

Being a southerner we didn’t see that much of the man like Sasha, but he did show up at the Drum Club one Thursday evening and his mixing was just on another level.

He seemed to play stuff we didn’t hear from anyone else either, heavy but with a real light touch at the same time.

This is the closest match I can find to my hazy memories (snowballs that night I think)…

Chakaping, that was a nice article, so true. Something about all the comments after such tunes allows us to relate to them even though we may not have had the same direct experiences (although I reckon I did date and eventually marry one of the best looking ladies in my town – divorced now!)

The article makes me think of us, as old men, still sitting listening to this stuff on youtube and whether that will be the case. My answer is of course it is as I often think back to what someone said a couple of years ago to me……….WHEN WE GROW OLD IT IS ONLY OUR BODY THAT AGES, WE REMAIN THE SAME WITHIN
