From an ex-Mercedes mechanic, ok reliability, poor build quality, poor longevity.
There used to be a rumour in our workshops that the 120 part of the model name was either the number of times it’d be in the workshop for repairs during it’s lifetime or the number of rust spots that would appear within the first three years!

Buy a VW Transporter, much better in every respect.

An equivalent Transporter to the one I’m considering (5 years old, 50k miles) would be double the price.

Plus I prefer an automatic, and auto Transporters are pretty hard to come by at decent prices.

Realistically, what kind of mileage (not mpg) can I expect to get out of that Merc engine? 100k, 150k 200k before the engine becomes a problem?

I know it’s not the best answer but I’ve seen and heard of some doing high mileage with no issues and others have been plagued with problems. As with any secondhand van, it’s going to be down to luck of the draw.

Personally, if I was going for one, I’d be going for something from a dealer of some description with a warranty on it. When things go wrong on Mercedes vans, the repair price can get very big very quickly!

If you want auto box, your only real option is the Merc, at least Merc are the kings of auto boxes.

My sprinter – a 2.2CDI engine – is on 310,000 miles. Engine-wise had a set of injector seals done (£350 if you can find a competent specialist – a lot of garages get scared or cock it up and quote £thousands), and a couple of wires relating to the fuel pump and rubbed together and shorted, although the fuel pump continued to function just not at full bung…. and I think thats it.

Had a LWB 115 auto Dualiner, totally loved it. Had to sell it to fund horse box for the wife. Miss it so much.
Had no problems with it mechanically or with rust.
Friend has the 120 and it is brill, engine is based on the 3ltr fitted to the ML. It has been re-mapped to around 250 bhp and by god does it shift.
You get a better spec for your money compared to a VW T5, depends what you want.

I am running a 2005 MB Viano (posh Vito) with the 2.2tdic and it has 105K on it. Have had no problems with it and love it. Mines the ELWB and has six leather captains seats. I run with just four seats in it and can easilt fit four bikes plus all the camping kiet etc in the back. I went for the ELWB as the bikes fit in the back even with the four seats in whereas the normal lwb wasnt quite long enough.

That transit looks good enough to tempt me away from mortgaging my soul for yet another VW when the time to change comes round again.

One I’m looking at is a 57 plate with 50k miles, which seems average/slightly below average mileage for the age.

Is that a Hüf house in the background of that transit pic then?

i have a 57 reg, owned from new now got 118,000 on clock!!
best van ive ever had, thought about replacing it for months, cant find anything as good.
problems.
egr failed at 4 mths – replaced under warrenty withing 48hrs
wiring loom from batt to alt & starter had to be replaced at 95k,£275 at dealers.
sensor replaced in exhaust at 102k £175
find a good dealer, they differ big time
best ive found are Northside, where i bought it and S & B at Lakeside
Fuel consumption i get 25-30 avg, this is not much different from any other van of this size, and i do not hang about
Only gripe is tyres, had a few probs with the Conti’s and had to replace them before tread worn twice on front, newer contis are OK and average 20 – 30k on front

make sure its manufacture date is after Nov 07, before this they had loads of problems with them!! Luckily they seemed to have sorted by the time i got mine in Nov 07
