My back is shot at the moment. I haven't been fiddling with my position on my bikes, just developed intense lower back pain. Its usually worst when I am getting out of bed. My matress is about 10 years old thinking its about time I got a new one.
Has anyone else purchased a new one recently. Seen these memory foam ones, not sure. Would appreciate some feedback.

Oh, and to answer your Q, I always go for a sprung mattress that feels instantly comfortable when I try it out.

Me Ma and Da got a memory foam mattress a while back, they are total converts.
Memory foam plus hard, thin pillow is meant to be good for the back isn't it?
I'd go for a pocket sprung mattress.
We both suffer from back ache problems, so spent an afternoon @ Dreams trying every mattress they had. Only one's we could feel any difference with, was the memory foam ones. Ended up buying a Tempur mattress & were very happy with it. Our backs are a lot better now too, I happily recommend them.
Aye, spoke to a boy in work who says much the same thing re; the foam job.
Its tough at the top, having to make such decisions.
Hey mate, I went for a memory foam mattress recently and it's great, I tried the same one out in my local shops sleepeezee and it was £400 however you can get them on feebay for £270.
Very comfy and my back is a lot better than it was, I ran a thread about this before I bought mine and a lot of people like the memory foam mattress's

Funnily enough we have just bought a new bed and mattress. We have put our old mattress (Tempur) and bed in the spare room. We bought a pocket sprung mattress with a memory foam topping, even went to the factory to have a proper lie on it because i have problems with my back due to work. After a month i am back sleeping on the Tempur mattress having had back problems due to new mattress. I am now unfortunately going to have to buy a new Tempur mattress to go on new bed to avoid further back problems. The exact problem i was hoping to avoid!! 
A couple of years ago I managed to pick up a pocket sprung matress with a memory foam top layer from my local Fenwicks for a very reasonably sum.
It took me a while to get used to it, and the SO always says that it makes her back hurt the first night she sleeps in it, but then sleeps like a baby from there on...
I do find that it gets a bit hot in the summer compared to a normal mattress, but I'd definitely buy another one.

Hypnos are the best non memory foam ones. Bought a new one about 4 months ago and must be the best grand we've spent.
Spend every penny you have on the best possible. If ever one thing was worth your money its a mattress.
Personally, I would go for a traditional job, foam is too sweaty but that your choice.
Bought, at great concern and against advice, an all foam mattress, normal+70mm mem. Most comfy bed I've ever had/tried and not even slightly sweaty.
We bought a pocket sprung (3000 springs!!!) with a memory foam top. Really comfy, little bit warmer than the old one, but ok. Tried them in the shops, they were 'on sale' complete bed was £899 down from £1299, yet we bought it online for £659! Worth shopping about.

Sounds like you need a new mattress.. but if your old one is still in good shape (just maybe too soft or hard) try a mattress topper. You can get memory foam ones (3" seems to be recommended) or a ZoneSleep topper - I went for one of the latter recently and it has definitely reduced my lower back pains significantly.
We've got a Dunlopillo latex foam mattress. They are expensive, but every time I get home after sleeping elsewhere it just feels so good. And it's not sweaty.
Most expensive you can afford.. perhaps.. but there is an awful lot of bullcrap out there waiting to rip you off.
Personally the most comfortable bed I've slept in is either our soft Ikea top of the range one (450 ish) when used with a top matress pad or a Futon Company one.
I think it's the layer of dense woolly stuff on top that I love in both cases. Damps down movement and feels so lovely on my body
Memory foams are ACE mines luuuuuuuuuuuurvely was £800 quid new which sounds VERY dear BUT its lasted over ten years and had a ten year guarentee so pro-rata its not bad, when I sleep in anyone elses bed I always have a 'princess and the pea' moment and can't sleep.... actually that sounded wrong..... 
Just meant splash out and it'll last 
Plus its got a Winter side and a Summer side one retains heat and keeps you snuggly one chucked it out the other side keeps you cooler
I have a memory foam mattress at home, and a normal mattress at uni. I find both comfortable, but I think I sleep better on the memory foam one. I can easily sleep for 15 or so hours on the memory foam, find it hard to sleep for more then 10-12 on my normal one.
After sleeping on a mid price matress for a few years we moved house and bought a bigger bed so looked at new ones. We went for a Tempur. It's a superking so it came into the "you could buy a really nice bike or cheap car for that" price range. It is flippin amazing though. I sleep much better on it and genuinely wake up feeling better.
If you can find the money I'd recommend one. They do a 60 day trial period so if it doesn't work out you can get a refund. We changed the pillows we got as we didn't like the funny shaped ones they did.

Got a Komfi Sleepsmart 700 after a fair bit of 'lying and trying' in a couple of different shops.
What helped was a discount from the friend of a friend who owned the shop, but after having it four months, I'm well pleased.
Like anything, though, you could pay lots if you want to.
Buybfrom a back specialist not a bed shop. Highly recommend backinaction.co.uk.
Had an all memory foam one but didn't like it. Was too soft. Sold it on STW classifieds...!!!
Replaced it with. Spring & memory foam one that's superb, but was £1k or thereabouts.
Chap at Dreams made me laugh, on about folk who roll up in a £40k car that they spend a few hours a week in, but baulk at paying a fraction of that on a mattress they spend 8 hours a night in.
I got a sleepatron dynamic postural modular rest system, its both amazing and crap all at once.
Just a quick pointer -
You mentioned you have a bad back. Don't be sucked in by claims of "orthopedic" matresses. The term has no clinical meaning what so ever.
Its surprising how many frau.. er, whiplash claimants decide they need a new £1k mattress after a minor accident, and that its a cost of the accident to be claimed back. Usually they had a bed like scardycats to start with....

They had 3 different matress' to try in their showroom above the factory - a medium foam, a firm foam and a mix of sprung with a foam topper.
We found the best one was the sprung with foam topping - more comfortable than just spring, but more supportive than just foam.
Certainly its warmer in winter than our old sprung matress, but its not sweaty.
And at £300 with local discount...very good value
