Off to NYC next week and thought I would pop into a bike shop while I am over there. Thinking I might be able to pick up some U.S. bling item you can’t get over here or at least a momento or something cheap.

Any shops to recommend having a browse or any items I could only get in NYC?

Indeed. If you’re there for work, there’s not really a nice shiny city center (sic) bike shop that I’ve found yet.*

*Disclaimer – Most of my work trips see me staying around Times Sq, so pretty damned central!

Been a few times, recommend sids bike shop and NYC velo….Not that cheap in general, rei an outdoor shop sells bike stuf also, that’s the place I have managed to get the odd bargain. Going back later in the year and will specifically go back to NYC velo only.

Will be Manhattan only for the most part but will be seeing most areas within there, might be going into Brooklyn one day though.

SIDS on 42 was my LBS when I lived there, Toga/Gotham bikes is also worth a visit.

Mind, it was 5 years ago that I was there.

Apart from bike stuff, when in NY I always go to Dave’s, Avenue of the Americas (check website)for jeans and workwear and hang out on Bleecker St (Amy’s bakery for breakfast, Fish (exceptional) for dinner and the Blind Tiger (for ace beer (28 hand pumps) right over the road). I find the village much more interesting than the supercharged commercialism of Times Sq. Williamsburg in Brooklyn is hipster cool, singlespeeds on the Williamsburg Bridge (great, high, hairy, wobbly walk). See if Jeffrey Lewis is playing anywhere. My mate lives high up with a view in W 42nd so I’ve never bothered with queueing and paying to go up in a lift.

Brooklyn has some of the best brownstones eg Cobble Hill and Park Slope but to visit they are just quiet and very very opulent areas, not much there for thrills. The area around the Brooklyn Brewery is more interesting.
