Thinking of getting my first road bike in the New Year

Previous riding has been MTB and now daily 14 miles on a Brompton

Saw that the Mango Point R was featured in road cc “value bike of the year” losing out to a B’Twin – but have tried it and doesn’t fit

Now decided on Mango but noticed they do a AR disc version too

Question is really which would be best suited to

    – occasional 25 mile commute
    – weekend rides with friends – around 50 miles

Noticed the Point R is 9.8KG (guessing with the upgrade Vision wheels this will be lighter?)

Point AR is 10.9KG with Tiagra groups

Am drawn towards Point R because of weight and looks

Which are of course the main reason anyone buys a bike

Is Mail order – so try before buying tricky !

    many thanks

I’ve been looking at them both too as my mileage is similar to yours.

Looks like you could shed a lot of weight on the Point AR just on the tyres, those Vee Tyres on the point AR are nearly 600g each. I bet you could save half a kilo just with some decent tyres for road use.

If you’re looking for a road bike then it would be the Point R. Fancy a little bit of bridleway bashing too? Then it’s the AR. IMO.

    Thanks for those replies

Does the Point R have similar weighty tyres

Have emailed Mango so will see what they recommend!

No, the Mango R has Kenda 25c tyres, should be lighter but I don’t know by how much…

Can’t help on this front. But if you buy let us know how it works out.

The AR is on my shortlist for a new purchase next month as a winter/commuter workhorse.

Sizing looks a little weird, big difference between a medium and a large.

Well, I ordered an AR frameset today (initial probationary period just finished at work), so will be able to report in soon enough.

    Hello,

How’s the mango AR? Any idea of the frame and for weight?

    Thanks

I bought an AR rolling chassis of here and would definitely recommend one. Had it about a month. Did tour of the black country on it and it was really good all round. Nice on the road and good off road with the right tyres. Wheels are very cheap though and need replacing.

Following this with interest despite favouring a steel frame and carbon forks they are very nice indeed.
Indepth review and daily practicality of the AR please
