  • Mancunian type people – bestest bike shops in your manor?

Am going to be up that way shortly with a bit of time to spare.

Where's best for a stroll and a drool? Ideally a mix of fat and skinny tyred stuff, but specialists in each would be good.

    Thanks in advance!

Harry Hall in manchester i think he's on whitworth street
Mike Cookson in whitefield is also good

if you're restricted to the town centre its a small choice..
Evans on Deansgate, Harry Halls on Whitworth Street.
Slightly out of town there is Edinburgh Bike Co In Rusholme and another Evans at the Chill factorE (not my spelling!)
Futher afield is Leisure Lakes in Bury or the small but perfectly formed Bycicle Smithy in Hazel Grove..!

When you up in the glorious North??

'Northwest mountain bike centre' – is of course mainly mtbs. Take Cheadle turning off M60 ( South Manc).
We use Jon at 'bicycle Smithy' on the A6 – Stockport. Near some quality riding if you have the time.

'Royles' – Wilmslow off A34, is good. ( more your type of area), alittle way out of Manc though.

MK Cycles in Bolton, Surosa in Oldham; the latter run by exworld champ Mandy Jones and hubby.

In town, there is also Bicycle Doctor in Rusholme (curry mile), but may not be your thing – it's a workers' co-operative. 😉 Good shop, though.

Also in town is the fixie kids' favourite GBH Custom Hacks in the Northern Quarter (a cockstride from the city centre). It's all retro lugged steel and lime green deep v rims.

If you've time for a pint, I've got one or two decent places I can recommend.

NW MTB again. You may even see Peaty in there.

Royles is good for darkside and about 10 mins drive from NW MTB

Northwest mountain bike centre- Why? I'd rather go to Leisure Lakes.
Harry Hall is good if you like roadbikes
Leisure Lakes has ALOT of kit however its miles out and unless you are coming in that way I wouldnt drive out TBH.
Edinburgh bikes/BikeDoctor- both close to each other but again not in the centre.

Why not go and do something interesting instead? Lowry? URBIS? Bike shops in Manc are just like bike shops anywhere else.

I was thinking that as well. I'm not a fan of full 100% RRP bikeshops like one of those mentioned above.

Although not as good as the down sarf' I would recommend visiting the Imperial War Museum.

No, my point was nothing to do with RRP, it was just that browsing bike shops can be done anywhere – and is slightly sad anyway – whereas Manchester, whatever you think of it, does have some unique cultural attractions. Even if all the bike shops in Manchester sold half-price Lynskeys on interest-free credit, it would still be a waste of time.

I might have been imagining it but hasn't MK cycles closed down?

Another one in Bolton well worth visiting for road stuff is Geoff's.

    Evans Cycles, Deansgate

(said with full knowledge of CFH's opinion of Evans…) 😉
but yeah, I agree with BWD – there's more interesting things to see and do in Manchester than look in bike shops that you can look in virtually anywhere.

BWD, I always try and do something when in any city, but also like to have a nose at bike shops!

Oh, and thanks so much for the suggestions. Apart from those which said Evans, of course! 😀

Timing is still a little TBC, but will see what happens!

Hora – The reason I like NWMTB centre is the fact I've known Andrew Kyffin for years, watched him build up his business, from a family cycle friendly, old fashioned place, by hard work and passion.

If you're in the North for a couple of days and are mobile, try Salts Mills in Saltaire, Bradford.

    http://www.saltsmill.org.uk/

Bit of culture (or not, depending on your views regarding David Hockney..) plus a huge bike shop for more earthly pleasures.

    http://www.allterraincycles.co.uk/visit.html

…and no, MK cycles is thriving….

Bunnyhop if the OP is there for a day Im thinking as much kit as possible under one roof(?) for him to wander round (Leisure lakes). I neither like or dislike Leisure Lakes (only been a few times).
