I’d like to make up a website but have no knowledge or experience of how to do it or even where to start. Can someone give me some pointers on this?

I’m sure I saw a thread the other day about it but I can’t find it now…

Just a few simple pages where i can upload some photos etc would be cool

Lots of options, but one of the free blogs will probably do.
Have a look at http://www.Posterous.com You can update it by sending it an email. Dead simple and links with all the other social media options. Free too!

Buy a domain and some webspace and install a blog/cms.

I use wordpress and really like the functionality. Although it is really for blogging, you can chose from many templates, and have permanent pages too, with photos.

Although you will end up with a web address along the lines of mountainbiking.wordpress.com, you can then buy your own web url.

I used http://www.fasthosts.co.uk, and they have a very easy interface for redirecting domains, but there are many other companies too.

So for example, if you click on http://www.transitionconsciousness.org it will take you to my wordpress blog which is http://transitionconsciousness.wordpress.com.

Easy really.

how do you get your website recognised to Google….. my hubbys martial arts website needs to go on tinternet (only members are looking at it at the moment and videos attached to the website can be seen through youtube….but how do toy actually get assigned to google in the first place… his website was ‘free’ from ‘freewebs’ or something similar.. cheers anyone…

elaine anne, get him to sign up to Google webmaster tools & Google Analytics. If he has a Google account he should be able to access them.

Google gives you some code that goes on each page of the site. I don’t know the ins & outs but this code let’s Google find his site.

Often Google gets it from links off other sites, but if not:

Submit the home page to

http://www.google.co.uk/addurl/

If you just want to host photos, there’s plenty of sites that do that. Flickr, PicasaWeb, Kodak…

If you give us a bit more information as to what you’re going to do with it, it’d be easier to make recommendations. Asking for “a web site” is like saying “I want a bike, what should I get?” Photo hosting, blogging, eCommerce, personal / small business, all possible but different solutions.

Apparantly you will need both a web designer and a developer both of whom have expensive car habits to fund.

You need to learn a whole new load of jargon to communicate with these guys
You will be told what you want rather than you tell them what you want

They will provide you with a webite without the functions you need but with lots of pretty colours that crashes regularly and that you cannot update.

Ultimately I’d like to see if I could find a sponsor to help me with the costs to getting them to the nationals. Difficult I know but anything is worth a try….

I love BMX but my 8 year old son is far more skilled than I am. I’d like to see it go as far as we can make it go…
