You’re hard drive is ****. Its deaded!

I had this myself a couple of months ago on my Macbook. You’ll need to get a new hard drive fitted

Hope you’ve backed it up recently. Cos thats the lot gone! Its a right PITA!

Yup, it cannot see the hardrive as most likely that’s foo-barred. Normal suggestions would be USB or external drive with bootable version but you/owner would have had to make that before. Have a search of macrumors

My guess is .. buy new harddrive, restore OS from internet (will be to the version the machine shipped with), load to current version of OSX ideally with the appstore account of the owner.

…or drop in a new drive and recover the Time Machine backup, right?

As above, if it’s been backed up, just put in a blank unformatted new drive, restart in recovery mode and point it at the back-up.

take your cloned boot drive. plug it in, hold down ‘C’, select the disk, boot up. Or not, if the whole machine is fubared.
