Does anybody use an Airport Express base station with a connceted USB harddrive for time machine backups? I’m hoping it is possible as time capsules are a rip, but mac compatibility can be frustrating at times (very rarely)

Airport Express does not support sharing of disks, I’m afraid.

    You’ll need a Time Capsule.

Would an airport extreme be more suitable? that appears to have shared drives

Yes, you can plug an external disk into an Extreme and it will work with Time Machine (if correctly formatted first). The USB port on the Express, as confirmed by allthegear is not enabled for disk sharing. There are also some NAS that will work. Lacie and Western Digital do them, although they are not officially supported by Apple.

Airport Extreme works fine with USB drives – well I say fine, it can hang the mac sometimes when it can’t find the USB drive, or the drive has gone to sleep, but this seems to be an OSX bug / feature rather than the Airport’s fault.
