  • Loose clutch – sram X9 Type 2 ?!

    Hi

I have a fairly new 1×10 setup with a x9 type 2 and narrow wide chain-ring (no guide). It hadn’t dropped a chain, even after some rough riding at Gawton etc, until recently when it comes off fairly frequently whenever any roots/speed are combined…

I appreciate it has worn in since but pulling the chain by hand, it feels very loose/soft compared to when it was all stiff and new. Could the clutch be knackered or loose?

    thanks

You can increase the tension on them.

Sram tech guys said the outer cover is just glued on so pull that off and tighten up the mechanism

The only caveat is you will probably need to have it apart to grease it, because chances are as soon as you crank up the clutch it will knock like a pig every time it moves to engage itself.

Yup, you can prize off the cover in the middle of the clutch pivot bit and tighten it, it’s a huge size Torx socket.
Also as mentioned above you might want to grease it all up first, in which case take the back of the cage off and use a hex key in the bolt that holds the cage to the mech body to work against the previously mentioned huge torx and you’ll be able to get the guts out. Be a wee bit careful as you go, the spring for the cage will release with a good ping as you go. Give it all a good clean and cover everything in grease then re-assemble, again being careful of the spring.
