    M4 then M5

M3 and A303 can be rubbish

and anyhow once you get past exeter on either route it all slows down / gets rubbish

Depends on the day & time you're doing it – on a Fri PM both will be pants.

If you go M3 there's a detour that cuts out the worst of the A303 around Stonehenge & the single carriageway bits to the W of it – Amesbury/Larkhill/Shrewton/Sutton Veny/Deverills/Mere. If the 303's clear it'll add about 10 mins, if not it could save hours.

M4 unless its late at night / early morning. The A303 has a high potential for getting rammed. You can generally get a higher average speed on the M4 /M5 route.

But if you want a picnic with a (nice) view then A303 it.

The A303 can be good if you get a clear run… but M4 safest.

M4 M5 leave a bit earlier around 4.30, I do salcombe pretty regularly and it's around 4 hours if you leave early, much higher speeds on the motorways it's always much slower past Exeter though.

Depends where you are starting from – SW or W London, M3/A303, anywhere else M4/M5.

Lived in Canary Wharf for a year so did the journey "home" pretty often – in fact most weekends! Dipped under 4 hours once (!), took over 8 hours on the worst trip.

What he said. But don't tell everyone dammit!!

In my experience it always saves time once you know the route, it's a bit twisty turny through the villages. Won't help you over the Blackdown hills bit though.. you might be better off skipping across to the M5 at Taunton then depending on traffic

plus offers a better chance to stop at a pub for lunch – unless the witches and warlocks get you in that part of the world….
