4 guys, mid 30’s, 2 know London quite well, 2 have no idea. 2 getting in to Paddington, 1 Euston, 1 into Victoria, all will be getting the train home at the end of the day. Central ish was what I was thinking so all can get to the stations easily, thinking West End or perhaps Holborn and out The City, happy to go further if needed.

Saturday day time crawl, 8 or so pubs, emphasis on something a little different and historical, places like Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese and Cittie of Yorke.

Any ideas for either ready made routes or pubs in the above area that must be visited?

I’m goign to recommend Gordon’s Wine Bar between Charing Cross and Embankment tubes. It has a great wine list and is well worth a visit.

Saturday city pubs are not always open. Id stick to the Covent garden end of Midtown, through to Mayfair, taking in some spots in Soho/Fitzrovia.

Top of my list would be:

    http://www.harpcoventgarden.com/
    http://www.thesevenstars1602.co.uk/
    Ye Grapes Shepherds Market
    http://www.theguinea.co.uk/
    Newman Arms Rathbone St

others will come to me, but Im due on a call.

Edit, just re read it’s a Saturday, so you’d have to check but most of the city / Smithfield-UBS would be shut, the London Bridge ones would be okay due to the market.

Here’s a few pub crawls I’ve been on. Might give you a taster for your Friday, they are almost all good old pubs back to the 1500’s in a few cases.
But being close to the city many wouldn’t be open Saturday making Friday afternoon prime time to sample the City.

If you find yourself in or around Brick Lane and need a snack, try the 24 hour brick lane beigel bake at the Bethnal Green Road end on your way to Shoreditch where there are a bunch of late night spots I believe.

London Bridge / Borough Market Pub Crawl

A short pub crawl that has no more than 2min between pubs so offers pleanty of scope to dip in or out as time allows, Borough Market is a great foodie market and allows you to grab some food on the hoof as needed.
London Bridge is a couple of stops on the tube for Angel and easy to get back to Liverpool Street via Moorgate, if you want to get direct to Brick Lane.

    City of London Pub Crawl

This crawl has longer between pubs but only a max of ten mins walk, going through the hart of the City of London ending up in the Smithfield market area, Smithfield Meat Market is the only remaining working old market in London, has plenty of food options at the Smithfield end and offers Fabric and other late ish bars if you end up here.
Short ride on the tube form Angel to Bank to start and then Chancery Lane Station to Liverpool St for Brick Lane or change at Bank to get back to Angel.

    Smithfield Market Pub Crawl

A version on the City of London crawl that cuts out the city, focusing on Smithfield and adding some extra pubs, all of the benefits of the above but with less time between pubs 2-3 mins max, some of my personal faves on this one!
    Same return options.

If you’ll be going to the YO Cheshire Cheese then start at Holburn (pub near tube in lovely wooden tudor building) a stroll around Lincolns Inn Fields (lawyer central) and after YOCC past St Brides (the journalists church the spire of which is said to have inspired traditional wedding cake design (variois memorials inside and also Murdoch married Jerry Hall there recently – there is a pub next to it haven’t been in in decades), walk past St Pauls before heading to Bow Lane (Bow Bells – born within the sound makes you a Cockney) then down the lane a few pubs, one in a little alley. Then over to Jamacia Inn (as above) past Bank of England/Royal Exchange along Cornhill before Leadenhall Market (Lamb as above), then Hung Drawn amd Quartered opposite Tower of London

Blue water trough on Cornhill / shops used in Bridget Jones Diary (snowy scene at end), Leadenhall Mkt used in many films inc Harry Potter. Also, opposite Royal Exchange at Bank is a statue to the guy who invented the machine which dug the tube tunnels (its a traffic hazard really these days !)

Note most of these are historic locations not great pubs

From Euston/Kings Cross I’d cross over the A40 into bloomsbury area..loads of pubs there ,for example The Lamb on Lamb’s conduit street, South of Coram’s fields, then onto The Perseverance perhaps.Time for some fresh air and a quick stroll to The Princess Louise on High Holborn , then on to Soho – Coach & Horses & French house have to be on the list.
I would then be half cut and require coffees at Bar Italia. 🙂
    Have fun.

Did something similar last year, albeit halves not pints. No jail either, just a dodgy club off Oxford street.

The City will be dead, so I would do something like

    Ye olde Mitre
    Citte of Yorke
    Princess Louise
    Ship Tavern
    Freemasons Arms
    Lamb & Flag
    The Harp
Gordon’s Wine Bar (Beer then Wine is fine)or the Chandos if you want to stick to beer

1.5 miles of walking and lots of good pubs and wine bar

(You could go to the Olde Chesire Cheese first (pretty close to the Mitre))

    Midtown

    You are dead to me.

    Ye olde Mitre
    Citte of Yorke
    Princess Louise
    Ship Tavern
    Freemasons Arms
    Lamb & Flag
    The Harp
Gordon’s Wine Bar (Beer then Wine is fine)

Add in Craft and The Ship & Shovell and that’s tidy.

    Crafty is sodding miles away.

And “Midtown” is a perfectly acceptable agentspeak for the crap bit between the City and civilisation 😀

There is a craft in Leather Lane, isn’t there? So that would fit in second. Not really my sort of place – I am a bit of a traditionist.

Ship and Shuvell would be a good alternative to Gordons or addition as penultimate step so you still finish off on wine.

Right, a plan has emerged, what do you think to:
    Craft Beer Co, Covent Garden.
    The Crown
    Cittie of Yorke
Bounce (random throw in for a chuckle)
    Ye Olde Mitre
    Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese
Knights Templar (not happy about this but one of the party wants cheap food, may swap out/miss it)
    Severn Stars
    The Wellington
    Lamb and Flag

And I’ve mapped Mefty’s suggestion too:

sod the pub crawl. Just sit in the Market Porter and work your way through the 10 odd beers and whatever ciders they have on. Stumble out to get food at the market.

Not mentioned here but that was an option which was dismissed as we’re not quite as good on the beer as we once were. 10 pubs is about our limited sadly.

Right then, an update as to the status of the crawl:
Craft Beer Co, Covent Graden – Lots of good beer, easy to find, an excellent start point.
The Crown, New Oxford Street – Lovely little pub, nice area to be outside too.
Cittie of Yorke – A pub I know well that did not disappoint, “like being in Lord of the Rings” was one of the descriptions I heard.
Bounce Ping Pong – Hilarious and well worth a visit. Broke the beer and pubs up nicely.
Ye Olde Mitre – Closed on the weekend.
Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese – A disappointment. Rammed full of Americans, roasting hot, staff uninterested.
    The Knights Templar – Closed.
The Seven Stars – Very, very locally. Everyone looked when we walked in, very strange place. We drank our beers quickly.
Ye Olde White Horse – Off plan, we had gin.
The Wellington – Nice pub, good beers.
The Nook Sports Bar – Off plan again. Rough as a rough think, we didn’t stay long.
The Harp – Rammed, couldn’t get in, so instead we went too…
The Marquis – Liked it a lot, good crisp selection and friendly staff.
The Lamb and Flag – Struggling by this point, nice but not outstanding pub.
And finally, The Sussex – Horrible place. We didn’t stay long and should never had gone in, however our judgement was now clouded.

Cracking day out though, really good fun. Next time we’re heading West I think, so I may be looking for Twickenham/Richmond based suggestions in the near future.

I normally like Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese a lot, cracking pub. But it was not good yesterday, not good at all. Maybe it’s not a Saturday afternoon kind of pub, I don’t know, either way, it was a little disappointing.

The Bermondsey Beer Mile was a popular option on Saturday afternoons when I lived in London: start at Fourpure and work your way up via Partizan. Brew by Numbers etc. Sadly Kernel has since closed to the public. Finish by tacking on a pub or two near London Bridge – The Royal Oak is a favourite or the Market Porter.

Twickenham/Richmond based suggestions in the near future.

    Orange tree
    The Sun
(The Cricketers, dont agree to play cricket for them)
    The Princes Head
    The Olde Ship
The White Cross (either walk to Twickenham Brdige (maybe via White Swan) and then the Turk’s Head or cross Richmond Bridge then longish walk to)
The Crown by Marble Hill Park
The White Swan Twickenham (there is a pub called the Barmy Arms opposite Eel Pie Island but I’ve never been to it)
If that is not enough then a bit of a hike to
    Prince Blucher
Sussex Arms both near Twickenham Green

I d add to twickenham as you will be walking past sandys fishmongers for fresh oysters, they open them and serve them on a tray of ice with lemon. Also the cafe on the old high st near the eel pie pub makes brilliant rolls and sandwiches, eat in or takeaway, good for rugby days.
Thanks for marble hill tip i ll try it.

The Crown is good local boozer, bit gastroed but still very much a pub with food, nice garden.

If you were to do that pub crawl I would do it in reverse as you need pubs to be closer later on – plus more food options in Richmond.

Barmy Arms is a full on barn of a rugby pub and not a patch on The White Swan which is one of my pre-match favourites and a quality boozer any day.
