I'm looking for around 10-15 tons of logs I can cut up and split for firewood. My last supplier is using much more of their surplus for kiln drying their timber.
I'm waiting to hear back from the local council. Seemingly they shred all their timber waste for landfill which sounds like madness to me.
I had a look on arbtalk but I understand that it only allows professional arborists to register.
Are there any tree surgeon types on here in Fife with a surplus of roadside collectable logs?

Ours does this and uses the chippings for their flower beddings, I keep meaning to try and catch the guys doing the felling and asking a favour.

That's my plan B
Not your way (in fact about as far down the other end of the country as it's possible to be), but my cousin is a "tree surgeon" who does a lot of contract work for his local council hedge clearing and alike. They shred all the small stuff and leave the bigger stuff in 4ft lengths by the side of the road. Without any advertising, the piles are usually gone within a few days - everyone's happy

When I went to the council yard yesterday they had a couple of tractor trailer loads that were just going to be shredded. I couldnt believe what I was seeing. There was a thread on here recently where the council in Ayrshire were cutting, splitting and delivering logs. Fife are missing out on an opportunity.
My hope was that that instead of firing them in the shredder they could store them in a corner of the yard and I could collect a couple of trailer loads a week till I filled our stores.

Have you tried the Forestry Commission? They sell logs up here. Think my old man got some for about £20 ton. Quite pricy I suppose for softwood but convenient for picking up at least.
mant tree surgeions provide wood to people who plit it and then they get the split wood for free perhaps try that given your contraption or offer storage or use of machine to split

redhall garden centre in edinburgh has piles of timber but i don't know prices , also i will be taking down a few trees here in the burgh shortly just waiting for necessary permissions to arrive
b1galus, thanks for that - what do you typically charge per ton for a roadside collection of timber? Is the Redhall garden centre the same place as the Redhall Walled Garden? I can seem to find a telephone number for them.
I'm looking to get a big stash of wood organised for next winter, I'll be away for most of the summer and will be pushed to get it dried if I find stuff later in the year.

Give the Fife Coast & Countryide Trust at Lochore a call. They sell off logs.

Think they're thinning in the woodland just to the east of the road, big ol' pile of logs stacked up when I rode past earlier.
Make sure its seasoned hardwood.That softwood crap doesn't last very long.
If you can stretch to another 10-ton or so, you'll make a lorry load. Get numbers off the timber wagons you see locally, a lot of drivers buy/sell and know where to source stuff.

I'd be keen to hear from you. I noticed a lot of fallen trees around Kirkcaldy last week. It would be a crying shame to see them shredded.

I'm still clearing up our own fallen timber. But you can never have too much stashed for a cold snap.
Have you spoken to Living Solutions in Thistle Industrial Estate in Cowdenbeath? They are social enterprise that assist the FC with forest clearance and recycle the wood for youth/ adult training projects. What isn't used generally gets shredded but they have offered decent stuff our way in the past.
They are normally dreaming up ideas of a recycling timber into affordable housing but are always open for a chat. I am trying to encourage them into assisting with clearance at Blairadam. Might take a while!
