Not having used lawyers much in the past, and if so, not for about fifteen years, I'm rather ignorant as to what might be seen as 'acceptable' in terms of fee structures, particularly in relation to Family Law in Scotland.

My relationship with the mother of my child is effectively over now, and we shall need to arrange the split. My feeling is that it will be amicable as neither of us wish to disrupt our daughter at this stage in life (she's about to embark on primary school education). However my feelings are that the woman is sharp. She's also a social worker and is well aware of rights/obligations and so on.
I'm not seeking to shirk my responsibilities, but nor do I wish to let her walk over me beyond our partnership.

So, I know to seek a Solicitor/Firm who specialise in this area of legislation, but what else should I expect, and are there any questions I should be asking? Might one be within the bounds of decency to request/expect a free consultation from anywhere?

    All help appreciated. Thanks.

It's an emotionally draining business though, so I need to sleep now.
    G'night

cant help specifically, but heard an ad for this on the radio the other day
    http://www.cmoptions.org/

it includes private agreement forms and other tools which may be of use in preparation and minimising legal costs.

and as reference, my provincial solicitor charges at a rate of £95 per hour.
