As the title suggests, what are peoples opinions of the different types of TV available?

I have done some research and it seems that both have advantages and disadvantages but i am about to buy a 55″ TV and am leaning towards plasma as it is meant to have the superior picture quality.

Anybody owned/ used both type at that size?

No motion blur with plasmas, better contract and deeper blacks plus a much wider viewing angle. We had a 50inch Samsung in the office – the only problem is that it makes a heck of a lot of heat! Burn in can also be an issue with them.
Panasonic are rumoured to be stopping production of plasma TV’s. Make of that what you will!

We bought a projector instead so we don’t have a huge chavvy box dominating the room – but we don’t watch regular telly, only films/box sets etc. 80″ effective screen size too.

    Each to their own. 🙂

    Have both
Plasma is by far the better picture, more natural, no blur, etch
Led is tiny though in comparison, newer tech, with 3D, etc

5 years ago I got a 42″ plasma as it was so much better than the LCDs for the reasons Rockhopper mentioned. They are much more power hungry though but as we’re not TV addicts it’s not an issue.
I believe that LCDs may be close to Plasma performance now.

    Plasma

Actually I’m not sure they are now.

    [edit]….. oh, wait.

    anyway, still Plasma 🙂

Plasma for me. The LEDs on the face of it look brighter and more vibrant, but if you look closely they miss a lot of detail.

That its not profitable to sell £1k+ AV enthusiasts TV’s when average Joe can nip down Tesco and pay £200 for something the same size.

It’ll be a sad day when mine dies. Pisses all over the bedroom Samsung LCD for picture quality.

aye, shame about Panasonic. They are my default suggestion when anyone wants a GOOD TV. Instead of scouring the reviews for the problems with different models of the cheaper brands it’s easier to just suggest them a Panasonic Plasma.

Problem is they can’t compete on price when the other makes start throwing in all the extra crap for low prices.

Are Panasonic going to focus on the mass produced LED and OLED leaving Pioneer to provide the high end Plasma’s? They bought Pioneer a few years ago who specialised in the high end stuff so sort of competed with Panasonic at certain parts of their product line?

I was looking for while between the three and went for a great 42 panasonic plasma, only 720p and 1080i. But can’t tell the difference, use it for ps3 gaming and blue ray both look great.

At 52″ I think a projector would be the better option as well to be honest. Mount it on the ceiling and invest in a nice screen and you’re sorted…

I looked at projectors and decided against it. The bulbs are very expensive, they can produce fan noise, they are far more expensive than a TV, you have to have a darkened room to really get the contrast, so closing curtains etc. and the area you are projecting onto needs to be as white and reflective as possible to get the best picture and keep it clean and dust free would be a faff, or have a pull down screen. You can make them work but what a faff.

    Not an AV enthusiast here….

Had the choice at 60″ of LCD/LED/Plasma. The power consumption on the Plasma was a lot higher so kind of ruled itself out. The picture wasn’t much different between all of them from my viewing eyes. So ended up with a Samsung LED, last of the non smart TV’s at a good price. Faultless with a good HD source.

leaning towards plasma as it is meant to have the superior picture quality.

Go and have a look with your own eyes and make sure they are all playing the same properly connected HD source and see what you think. If you can’t tell the difference then go for the one with the best price.

Mine was £200 second hand with hardly any hours on the bulb – it’s 720p and it looks great. Don’t watch it much in the daytime so closing curtains etc not really an issue. Currently projecting onto a white wall but will probably get a drop down screen at some point. There is a little bit of fan noise.

I use it with Apple TV to watch Netflix/YouTube/Vimeo and the odd iTunes download, plus stuff streamed off my HD or iplayer etc. Not sure I’d want one if I sat in front of regular TV all evening every day as I guess you’d burn through lamps reasonably quickly.

Unless you’ve got a special room for watching your telly that isn’t your normal front room, having a massive telly dominating the room is just horrible, IMO. Unless you’re one of those weird people who just has the telly on constantly, even when no one’s really watching it.

    My 10 pence worth:

    Plasma:
The blacks for cinema style movie viewing are amazing. Power consumption is very high and they can burn a residual image into your screen if left paused or showing a static image for too long. They also don’t like to be moved.

    LED / LCD:
Can get super low power options, very thin, great image but no where near the black contrasts (think shadows and moody cinematic stuff). Still fine though. Your eyes adjust. It’s only if you sit the 2 next to each other that you truly notice the difference in the real world.

LCD (particularly Samsung) struggle to do flesh tones properly. This is still the case with the top of the range stuff. Impossible to tell in the shop.

    Get a plasma.

The issue of image burn on Plasma’s is not a real issue these days. I think you’d have to leave a High Def image on pause for days to get this.

I think the power consumption issue with Plasma’s is also overplayed. I’ve not seen a signifcant jump in my electricity bill since getting my Plasma screen and its on alot.

not noticed that one really, maybe I just don’t watch enough stuff thats heavy on the “fleshy” tones though 😳

Thanks for all the replys. I am going to check them out this weekend but after reading the above comments it looks like plasma will be the one to go for.

It will be going up on the wall in the living room (which is quite large) and will be used mostly at night. Surround sound system to follow but i guess that is for a different thread!!!
