Rideable track to Greenburn Mine, long slog to Swirl How (though never ridden it), down to the tarn should be alright, then track from there.

as boxelder says, from Greenburn mine it’ll be a big carry up Wet side edge, the whole route works better in reverse, Wet side into Greenburn is a great descent! If you do go ahead with it, take the track that contours round the West flank of Swirl How, it’s decent techy singletrack that saves an unrewarding flog over the summit. Not done the descent to Seathwaite tarn but it looks steep.

thanks for the info, but a change of plan has been hatched.

Green up edge is now the target. starting at grasmere, but which was back?

The descent to Stonethwaite isn’t great. Turning back and retracing your steps to Grasmere is pretty poo too. There’s a descent down to the Dunmail Raise end of Thirlmere but it’s a bit of a bogfest. Or you could head over Ullscarf to Blea Tarn or over towards Stake Pass ?

If you’re set on it Ton, make your way behind Calf Crag and come off Steel Fell to Townend. Don’t worry about the route looking short, it’ll be slow.

never really ridden from ambleside/Grasmere area, for this reason.
Coniston and Keswick just seem easier to plan rides from.

any other idea’s from Grasmere/ambleside area.

If you’re absolutely dead set on including Greenup Edge in a ride then you could follow this route from thestabiliser’s ‘But It Looked Okay On The Map’ Guide:

Grasmere > Dunmail Raise > Wythburn > Harrop Tarn > Blea Tarn > Watendlath > Rosthwaite > Stonethwaite > Greenup Edge > Grasmere.

That will give you a good day out on with your bike.

To be fair, the rest of the route is pretty good, but Stonethwaite to Grasmere is a slog, even if you don’t mind a bit of hike-a-bike.
