Ladies what works for you in the short department?!?

More or less as the title suggests, I’m looking for some advice on some proper bike shorts for my girlfriend, I’ll be taking her to try some on over the weekend, however some pointers on what I should get her to look out for would be wicked.

Any brands that perform better than others? Comfort/ durability etc

She mainly rides trails and cycle paths at the moment and finds she suffers more on longer trips however I would like to introduce her to the wonderful world of the mountains this summer so the comfier she is the better.

Depends what she wants, but the women specific lycra shorts (or lycra in baggies style) are normally better because the pad is shaped differently. I tend to wear just lycra - sometimes with an old pair of boardies on top - and they vary quite a lot between companies so worth trying on a few. Make sure the waist isn't too tight because this gets annoying. My favourite pair for long rides are assos, but they're pretty pricey. Groundeffect (online only) are very good value for money and the leg elastic isn't too tight which I like.

My skins are De Marchi and are really nice, resonably priced and I've had them for years. Baggy wise I have struggled to get shorts to fit me. I would say I'm a "normal" sized woman in that I'm not super skinny but I have hips and cycling thighs, however I struggle to get baggies to fit me as often the ones with inbuilt liners cut off the circulation in my thighs. So I have struggled to find any. To be honest woman vary in size and shape so much more than blokes than blokes that she will just have to try some on and see how fit. good luck! Let us know what she buys .. then I can try them!!

Mrs Hidetherum likes womens specific endura clipfast liners.
The womens endura liners are a bit of a snug fit in the legs.
The endura liners are even used inside FOX shorts which are currently the favourites. MRS H is mightly impressed with the Endura Mt500 waterproof shorts at the moment too.

Thanks for the advice girls, think the assos ones may be a little out of my price leage just now. Will head to the shops and see what they have got, hopefully she will find a pair she feels comfortable in.

Pearl Izumi work for me; I use those or Endura liner shorts. It really is a case of try them on, and don't necessarily buy loads of pairs at once - buy one pair and see if they work first.

I have gone minimalist, together with a minimalist saddle. Makes such a difference. Baggies on top though!

My GF started off in endura humvee 3/4's for modesty, then progressed to lycra 3/4's alone. Then ended up pregnant. (nothing to do with the switch from baggies to lycra you understand, just a coincidence).

Tribal Chief-that pic is awesome!

(Lycra with a inner bum Pad makes my GF look plump but very comfy and looks great in standard lycra but complains of saddle soreness.)

C-G what are those Craft liners like? Do they have grippers on the legs? I kept debating whether to buy a pair but they look like they may ride up (like a lot of shorts do), no idea why it isn't hard to put grippers on stuff like that.
Hel, i struggle to find Cannondale stuff, where do you get yours from?
Hidetherum, where can you find teh waterproof Enduras? I just looked and everyone sells the lycra ones but not women's specific water proof ones!

For the fuller figure, Sandy got her baggys from the USA from Team Estrogen
Their sizing is a bit generous. Delivery pretty quick even considering its coming across the pond.

I like the Endura clickfast lycra shorts and for 3/4 lycra I have some of these: http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/trek-criterium-knicker-womens-id48880.html which are super comfy and a snip at £20

I also like Sombrio baggies, but the sizing is a bit weird. Penny Lane (http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Sombrio_Ladies_Penny_Lane_Baggy_Shorts/5360047383/) are my favorates though as they are a great fit.

Er, actually I have always got Cannondale stuff from a friend who works there, so not sure about retail outlets. I think the Edinburgh Co-op stocks it. Its amazing quality and the sizing is good, well good for a midget like me. Good quality padding etc. Most other shorts I have the pads and stiching part company well before the shorts wear out.

Millie I like the look of the TRek, do you mind me asking about sizing! If you don't want to post it on here could you e-mail me your size and which ones you went for! Otherwise I hate buying stuff then having to send it back as I got the sizes wrong! Thanks.
I tried Sombrio before but found their sizings very weird so didn't bother again.
Tandem some of the Team Estrogen stuff looks quite nice, I may have a look when I go out to the States.

M-c - the Craft liners are good. Very short in the leg with no grippers, think men's boxers. Just checked and where the padding ends, there is around 1" leg length - does that make sense? Nothing to ride up as it were.

It's taken me years to realise that hugely padded shorts are not comfy.

The others I wear are literally like a pair of bikini knickers with a very thin pad (think panty liner). Fine for a couple of hours riding.
