Will try and keep descriptions short…

A few months ago – end-ish July, I fell through a ceiling between joists. I suppose, 14ish years flooring, it was bound to happen at some point. Thankfully, I didn’t go all the way through – my left lowest rib and elbows stopped that happening. I assume that was some kind of rib-fracture as sneezing still induces a little bit of pain now. 🙂 It was an absolute world of pain for a few weeks though. 😡

Anyway, during the fall, I managed to whack the inside of my right knee off a joist (or something) on the way down but in the following few weeks of clouded rib pain vs painkillers, I kinda didn’t really notice it. It was only as the weeks went on, that it became more of a thing.

It’s weird as it doesn’t affect walking at all (or kneeling…and I do enough of that from day to day) and any front to back hingeing of the knee is not painful at all. However, if there’s any kind of sideways/twist it hurts quite a bit. I can locate the pain to the inside-top of my tibia (where it widens out) and can cause pain when I put finger pressure on it. Other than that, there’s no day-to-day pain unless there’s lateral/twisty movement.

Obviously, my knees are pretty integral to my work. I’ve not done a day’s work without built-in kneepads and to be fair, they’ve never given me a days trouble really.

Really wanting to get back out and do some running over the winter and will be boarding a few times in Jan/March and for long term work, just a bit worried about it. 😐

So, GP? Bite the bullet and see a physio privately?

Or MTFU – it’ll go away in time?

I had similar with an elbow when I was in my mid 40s. I fell off the bike drunk, while trying to climb a very steep hill on the way home from the pub! For a year and a half afterwards it was painful if I twisted it sideways or reached behind me to pick something up, but all else was good.
I thought I’d given it enough time so I got an apt to see a specialist who said……..”Elbows are tricky things”. We should have left it there, but we went through the various tests and scans and figured there was nothing obvious and the only way to proceed would be to cut it open and look inside. No thanks, said I.
Anyway…after two years it went away and I’ve never had a hint of a problem since.

I now have bad knees and I ride way higher in the saddle which seems to keep problems at bay.

That won’t be any help to you, but I reckon that if you think you have a problem it’s best to see a doctor and go from there.

Thanks for the answer – I’d normally let it sort itself. It’s not like it doesn’t get lots of exercise – I’m not sat at a desk all day or anything. It’s just that it got to a level after a month or so and doesn’t really seem to have improved since. I need it for work more than anything and have seen the state some colleagues’ knees have got to because they a) didn’t look after them in the first place and b) ignored problems for months when they surfaced.

Sounds like gammy knee – see GP and ask for referral to ortho.

Sounds similar to an old injury that still annoys me sometimes – I eventually discovered i’d torn my lateral meniscus, doctor said I probably wasn’t making it any worse by walking & cycling, especially cycling as it’s non impact & strengthens the quads which helps support the joint and resists any twisting motions that could make things worse. Could also be a cruciate – I apparently slightly tore that at the same time… I eventually had surgery to try & tidy it up as I wanted to keep running / playing footy / badminton etc. but it made little difference – if I bend my leg & twist at the same time it occasionally locks up, my missus had to rescue me when swimming in a lake in a dramatic pedalo rescue one time 😳

I’d get it looked at – in the meantime, at risk of stating the obvious, avoid anything that hurts – that might be making things worse.

*edit – although when you see doctors still discovering new ligaments in the knee as recently as 2 **** years ago it makes me slightly suspicious that they actually had the slightest clue what was going on, in mine anyway 😕
