been having pain in my left knee for a few months now, started initially when running, then progressed to cycling also. I started using spd's last summer, not sure if this is relevant, I have them fairly loose so there is quite a bit of float, also pain initially when running not cycling. Had an mri scan last week and results have come back showing nothing, confused now as a physio i know thought it would be cartilage damage. I now cannot run and the pain when cycling is getting progressively worse, has anyone any experience of this or advice, thanks

the pain is to the outer lower section of my knee, there is no pain at first but as the ride progresses the pain starts and sometimes completely stops me being able to pedal, other times its just uncomfortable, but even when pain is at its worse walkin is no problem

Sounds like your IT band, that always affects the outside, lower portion of the knee. Your physio should know all about it. Stretching, ice, not going to full distance on a ride, should help, mine still hurts after 6 months, but I'm crap at doing all those things I just mentioned! Which reminds me...

Stretch it by placing the affected leg in front but on the other side of you other leg (imagine a wanting to wee but holding it in) then lean over to the unaffected side.

Check youtube, there's lots of exercises on there, but best go to a physio first.

Foam roller on the ground, lie on it on your side then move it up and down the outside of the affected leg from knee to hip. Might work, unlikely to do any serious harm, guaranteed to be highly unpleasant whilst doing it though...

Not really enough info to go on but suspect ITB, patello-femoral or possibly originating somewhere other than the knee (i.e. your back).
What made your physio think cartilage damage was the likely culprit? How old are you?

I'm only 30 but played rugby for years, the thought with cartilage damage was there was only pain due to friction of knee moving, no pressure pain anywhere and no pain twisting the knee in any direction

I had a knee problem which was purely to do with using my quads too much on the bike and not using the gluteals enouigh. Phisio sorted it out in a few weeks. But it could be lots of things...

Sounds like patellofemoral (normally due to difference in strength between medial and lateral quads) or ITB then - both physio problems and both fixable
