How come so many folk use kilometers instead of miles when they’re cycling? Is it a way to get more numbers in to your ride total? ie “I rode 40km” instead of 25 miles.
ooOOoo, I’m guilty. I normally use miles but if the conversation is about km, I’ll say clicks. Old habits die hard. (especially when you’re not trying to change)
I adopted Km for cycling after so many years of hillwalking where it’s simply more convenient on account of metric mapping. I’ve recently started using Miles on the road as I’m getting to old to keep converting it in my head when I see road signs.
When marking up a route card it’s much easier to think of 500m to next turn and read that off the computer.
I know some people find it challenging to swap between both systems but once you have enough experience and have improved your skills enough then you might be able to do it too.
Metres for height gain, because that is how the maps are marked. Then km for distance to be consistent.
I usually think that if I or anyone else cares enough to want to know the equivalent imperial stats, then they’ll be able to work it out. After all, conversion rates aren’t a secret!
I believe that the correct way is to refer to bigger numbers in Miles.. As in I rode 30 miles. And small measurements are to best understood when the metric system is used. The diameter is 8mm. 🙂
